Antique Early 20th-Century Patinated Brass French Chandelier with Torches

About the Item

This unique chandelier was made in France in the Provence of Brittany in the early 20th century around 1910. It is completely made of patinated bronze and it was made for gaslighting. The chandelier has a circular design typical for the Brittany region. It has four arms recently fitted with E27 light fixtures and new electrical wiring. All four arms have a separate gas tap and each arm ends with a matt glass torch-shaped ornament that covers the bulb. On top of the chandelier sits a classic double-headed eagle. A long chain and ceiling cover with a length of over 40 inches make this piece complete. originally this was a gas chandelier made for city gas. The 19th century saw the advent of a new source of energy and lighting produced from the distillation of coal: town gas, also known as manufactured gas. This invention provided heat and light and was an integral feature of an innovative century. In the mid 19th century all medium-sized and major cities in France had their gasworks and public distribution networks. Until the First World War, the gas lamp remained the most popular source of lighting. After the war, the incandescent lamp would continue to gain ground. However, this was a gradual process, so the gas lamp remained a normal phenomenon until the Second World War. During the Second World War, the supply of fuel through pipes in Western Europe largely came to a standstill. As a result, after the war, people had to start all over again with setting up things like mains networks, lighting, and heating. This led to the large abolition of gas as a fuel for lighting. With this, it was also done with the gas lamp as lighting for the home.

Repaired: The chandelier was converted to an electric fixture. One arm was broken and it was brazed with silver. Wear consistent with age and use. All wiring is of recent date. The chandelier is clean, without defects and is solid and ready for use. It is wired for US electricity.
