A Belle Epoque Eight Arm Chandelier Modelled with Dionysis/Bacchus Masks

About the Item

This chandelier has a heme-spherical “bag” formed as florets and eight down-swept lights with opaque flower-form shades interspersed with masques of the young Dionysis/Bacchus, so provides a lot of potential candlepower. The vinous theme is further developed by the multi-coloured fruiting vine. The gilt bronze frame is modelled as stylised acanthus. The whole confection speaks of the wine harvest, of celebration of the fruitfulness of the earth. From pendant finial to the original canopy it speaks of hospitality and new life. There are four candelabra light sockets in the interior of the chandelier. Height is for the chandelier, chain and canopy.

This chandelier was probably made by the Paris bronzier Baguès, circa 1900. The botanical forms of the cage, and the shapes of the rock-crystal prisms, recall the Rococo style of the 18th century. But the sinuous cast-bronze curves channel the Art Nouveau style that was then all the rage. The seamless union of the two styles is a hallmark of the Belle Époque...
