Marvelous vintage Mid-Century Modern orange dome or pendant hanging light fixture by Lightolier. Comprised of orange enameled metal, hardwired, 3 bulb socket, 3 way switch, white chain, and orange ceiling canopy. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, There are some very small nicks or scratches to finish, both inside and out, but only when you look closely. Wiring, socket, and switch have been checked. This is a gorgeous Mid-Century Modern dome or pendant hanging light fixture by Lightolier. It is comprised of a striking bright orange enameled metal dome trimmed with a thin white recessed groove surrounding the base of the dome that allows the light to peek through. A simple but quite eye-catching detail!! The inner dome is white and holds a 3 bulb socket on a white perforated light diffuser. And it bears an interesting and useful feature… depending upon the amount of light you prefer, you can have 1 bulb on, 2 bulbs on, or all 3 bulbs on. Simply turn the white cylindrical knob located in the center of the frosted glass lens to your preferred ambience. The unit is hardwired so when you turn it on at the wall switch, it will be at your chosen setting. Convenient!!! A beautiful white chain extends from a fabulous orange canopy, hooks to a galvanized top ring, and suspends the dome from the ceiling. It screams Mid-Century Modern MAGNIFICENCE and will be incredible in your home whether over the desk in your home office, in a sitting room over a wonderful chaise lounge, or in your kitchen or dining area above your table. And this COLOR!! It is sure to stand out and make a BOLD statement in whatever room you choose! Lightolier was founded in 1904 by Bernhard Blitzer under the name New York Gas and Appliance Company. In its early years, the company specialized in fancy decorative chandeliers, then shifted to the high-end design and architectural markets in the 1920s. In the 1960s Lightolier introduced the first track lighting system, designed by the late Anthony C. Donato, which was a vertically integrated track, unlike the horizontal tracks of today. During this same period Lightolier began importing European designs, including that of Gaetano Sciolari and another notable success designed by Michael Lax known as the Lytegem series which has a place in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. They were also the first lighting company to introduce digital lighting systems in the 90’s. Lightolier is a Sustaining Member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, a founding member of the American Lighting Association, an ally of the EPA Green Lights program, a Partner of the Lighting Research Center, and is still a leading lighting company today. Founded in 1904 in New York and family-operated through most of its history, Lightolier was one of the pioneering American electric lighting companies, best known for its embrace of stylistic and technical innovations.

Collectors focus on vintage Lightolier lighting fixtures produced from the 1950s and into the 1970s, when an in-house design team led by Gerald Thurston — and a stellar cast of international design contributors — created an array of practical yet aesthetically lively table lamps, floor lamps, sconces and chandeliers.

Amidst the post-World War II building boom, Lightolier — the name combines “light” and “chandelier” — aggressively boosted its residential lighting division. Thurston, who was strongly influenced by the sleek designs of Gino Sarfatti and his Italian lighting firm Arteluce, towards simpler lamp designs that offered flexibility of function. His best-known designs include the Cricket task light — a lamp with an adjustable enameled metal hood that toggles on a slender bent-metal base — and the three-legged Tripod floor lamp. At the same time, Thurston had a wonderful eye for talent and sought work from some of the lesser-known greats of the era, such as Paavo Tynell, the Finnish lighting designer, who designed several brass chandeliers for Lightolier with his trademark elegant flamboyance.

And more, Thurston recognized abilities in designers not known for their work in lighting.

Edward Wormley, head of furniture design for Dunbar, produced several noteworthy chandeliers employing canisters and reflective hoods. Alvin Lustig was famed as a graphic designer. His ca. 1953 Ring ceiling fixture for Lightolier had a minimalist techno look some 30 years ahead of its time. But this was par. Designed by Michael Lax in 1964, the Lytegem high-intensity lamp — included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art — features a ball-shaped shade attached with a chromed armature to a cubic base, a form that would be widely copied in the following decade. Chandeliers designed in the early 1970s by Gaetano Sciolari, with details such as acrylic diffusers and vertical, two-bulb arms, would define the look of lighting in their day.
