About the Item

For sale is a fabulous, rare, Mid-Century "Triosonate" ceiling light by RAAK Amsterdam, dating from the 1970s. The light, which consists of a large smoked glass shade with three lava-style dimples that correspond with the triple lights on the copper-effect metal lamp holder, gives off a wonderful warm light and would look fabulous over a table. In good working order and excellent vintage condition, the light has some wear commensurate with 50+ years of age and careful use. Of note, there are some very faint scratches to the bottom of the glass shade (see last few photos), and some expected chipping to the non-visible edge of the glass aperture, but absolutely nothing to detract. The light still retains its original RAAK label on the inside of the lampholder and has the original ceiling rose. RAAK is a distinguished Dutch lighting manufacturer, founded in 1954 by Carel Lockhorn, a former Philips Lighting employee. Based in Amsterdam, with a secondary location later in Eindhoven, RAAK’s tagline—“Illuminated Architecture” (“Verlichte Architectuur”)—reflected its philosophy of crafting fixtures that not only provide illumination but also harmoniously integrate into high-concept interiors. The company became a star of mid-century modernism, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s, celebrated for its futuristic, Space-Age aesthetic, realised through elegant combinations of glass and metal. Notably, RAAK collaborated with a host of designers and artists, among them Sergio Asti, Bertrand Balas, Nanny Still, and many others.
