20th Century Ignazio Gardella Floor Lamp Mod. Lte8 for Azucena, 50s

About the Item

Ignazio Gardella (1905-1999) was an Italian architect, engineer and designer. His long professional career produced an enormous number of projects and achievements. Among the first buildings may be mentioned the Antitubercular Dispensary in Alessandria. He received numerous awards, including: the Olivetti National Prize for Architecture (1955), the Gold Medal of the President of the Republic to the Benemeriti della Scuola, della Cultura e dell'Arte (1977), the Leone d'oro alla carriera from the Venice Biennale (1996). Gardella's architecture always maintains a composure that could be described as classical, both from the extreme refinement of detail, and from his control of the overall design of the building and architectural space. He was also one of the founders of Azucena, together with Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Corrado Corradi Dell'Acqua, in 1947. Here we have a floor lamp model LTE8 with painted iron stem, marble base, and pressed glass reflector and bowl designed by Ignazio Gardella for Azucena in 1956. Published in: G. Gramigna, a cura di, Repertorio del design italiano 1950-2000 per l'arredamento domestico, Allemandi, 2003, p. 20, 49. Good condition, fully original, fully working. We recommend a wooden crate for shipping to prevent glass damage. The lighting system can be rewired to US standards upon request.

  • 20th Century Luigi Caccia Dominioni Floor Lamp model LTE5 Imbuto for Azucena 50s
    By Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Azucena
    Located in Turin, Turin
Founded in 1947 by Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Ignazio Gardella, and Corrado Corradi Dell'Acqua, the Italian brand Azucena has always stood out for its collections that combine formal elegance, understated luxury, pure aesthetics, and craftsmanship. The brand, which the architects call Azucena after the name of the gypsy from the theatrical opera Il Trovatore, is created both to collect some of their furniture designs for use in furnishing the buildings they designed and, conversely, to be able to produce individually some furniture that is part of furniture series they designed. Here the famous Floor Lamp model LTE5 so called "Imbuto": the name of this lamp also very clearly explains the inspiration from which the shape originated: a funnel. However, in this object of the funnel only the name remains. The lampshade is a metal cone that extends toward each other thanks to a thin stem from which a wide halo of light comes out. Originally the design also had another name, namely "flûte." This shows that Luigi Caccia Dominioni's ideas came from simple objects but also from rarer instruments. The humble funnel meets the sophisticated flûte, an instrument that collects and guides water alongside another that holds wine and champagne, one functional and one exceptional, one made of plastic or metal and one of crystal: this was Caccia Dominioni's world, in which the exceptionality of everyday life and the most special moments coexisted. With its essentiality and functionality, the Imbuto lamp...

  • 20th Century Gino Sarfatti Arteluce Set of 3 Floor Lamps Mod. 1073 '50s
    By Gino Sarfatti, Arteluce
    Located in Turin, Turin
One of the most significant figures in the world of Italian design of the second half of the 20th century was Gino Sarfatti. Venetian by birth and Genoese by training, Sarfatti became Milanese in 1935, first collaborating with the lighting company Lumen and then founding Arteluce Società Anonima A.L. It was, however, the terrible period of racial laws and it was therefore necessary to wait until the end of the war for the company to begin full-scale production. In 1949, a factory was opened in Milan. It was here that Sarfatti succeeded in interpreting the taste of its customers: if a lamp on display was requested, several pieces of that model were made, without creating prototypes and never exceeding a few dozen copies. The store then became the meeting place for a refined group of architects and decorators who would use Sarfatti's lighting in the furnishings of the Milanese bourgeoisie. Here set of 3 floor...
