Angelo Lelii “12687”  Floor Lamp for Arredoluce, 1958

About the Item

Angelo Lelii “12687” Floor Lamp for Arredoluce, Glass and Marble, Italy, 1958 Angelo Lelii’s “12687” floor lamp for Arredoluce, designed in 1958, draws from Japanese spatial balance and Italian technical precision. Twin vertical stems support two opaline glass shades, each cuboid with softened edges, suspended to create diffused, ambient light. The brass elements holding the bulbs show minimal and refined design, allowing the shades to appear weightless, a subtle dialogue with kinetic art. When lit, the lamp casts a cascading glow that moves subtly with ambient activity. The base structure uses bent brass rods intersecting a horizontal tubular shaft, forming a linear support that mimics Japanese joinery. A clear sheathed cord follows the form, visible but restrained, aligning with the visual transparency of the whole piece. Lelii’s innovation lay in combining high craftsmanship with engineering foresight. The lamp predates Arredoluce’s halogen experiments but anticipates its shift toward modular elements and integrated floor switches.  Angelo Lelii helped change the way modern lighting was made and understood. He started small, designing lamps in his basement before World War II. In 1946, Domus featured three of his pieces—an early sign that something important was happening. What set Lelii apart was how he thought about light. He didn’t just design objects. He shaped environments. His lamps responded to space, mood, and use. Long before the idea of smart lighting or ambient tech, Lelii created systems where form followed emotion. Arredoluce pieces act almost like analog interfaces, built not only to shine but to speak softly to the room around them. The item is available in New York.
