A pair of striking solid bronze candle stands from Italy c.1880 wired as floor lamps. These candle stands are based on the originals first cast during the late 1500's-early 1600's used to illuminate the interiors of palazzos and villas of the wealthy in Italy. The large circular dish at the top is known as a bobeche and was necessary to capture melting wax as candles burned. The weight of the bronze and the circular base ensured the stability of the candle stands from being inadvertently tipped over and starting a fire that would be difficult to extinguish. But it is the wonderful sculptural form of the candle stand that continues to exert a visual fascination that is as powerful today as when they were first created. The use of a pleasing arrangement of circular forms interspersed with ringed sections is reminiscent of the finest wooden furniture created and crafted on a lathe out of precious walnut and fruitwood. Tables and chairs used these same forms to create beauty and sumptuousness in interiors and guaranteed that Italian taste was influential across Europe. Because these candle stands have the same aspect no matter what angle they are viewed from they were ideal to be moved into any space where light was needed and the bronze could be kept polished and cleaned in order to remain reflective. The patina they have achieved after this length of time is truly wonderful and the smooth surface is a delight to the touch. Bold and sculptural, these floor lamps will add an impressive texture to any room where they are placed. They have been rewired for American electricity and fitted with a three way switch for the bulb in order to control the level of light. Topped with simple and modern drum shades the strong form of these lamps remain the focus of attention.
