Poul Henningsen – PH 80 – Floor lamp – Louis Poulsen – 1974

About the Item

Poul Henningsen designed the three-screen system in 1925-26. The first lamps based on this system were designed by PH in collaboration with Louis Poulsen for an exhibition in Paris. This partnership continued until his death in 1967. PH 80 is part of PH’s three-screen series. PH designed not just a lamp, but an entire system – over the years, around a thousand different models have been produced. PH was the first to approach enlightenment in a scientific way, using the logarithmic spiral as a basis. By applying a design based on the logarithmic spiral, he managed to achieve an even light distribution over the entire curve of the screen. The lamp was created in 1974, when PH had already passed away, in honor of the fact that he was born eighty years earlier – hence the name PH 80. The original PH 80 designed in 1974 has a characteristic red upper reflector that provides a warm and spreads atmospheric light. The shades made of opal acrylic give the lamp a fresh look and emit a pleasant diffused light. The lamp is very good condition with minimal signs of age and use.

The fixture emits diffuse and symmetrical light. The majority of the light is directed downwards, and the opal acrylic shades provide comfortable room lighting. The red hue of the top reflector helps give the light a warmer glow. Poul Henningsen designed the three-shade system back in 1925-1926. The first lights using the system were designed by PH in cooperation with Louis Poulsen for an exhibition in Paris. This partnership continued up until his death in 1967. Throughout his life, PH sought to create glare-free light, direct light where it was most needed, and create soft shadows, using incandescent bulbs as a light source. PH 80...
