Pierre Guariche "G1" Wall Lamp Edition Disderot, France 1950s

About the Item

Pierre Guariche's "G1" wall lamp is a quintessential piece of mid-century French design. The “G1” was originally designed by Guariche in 1951, and quickly became a marker of French 1950s design. Manufactured by Disderot in the early 1950s, this iconic lamp has left an indelible mark on the world of design outside of France as well. Pierre Guariche was a visionary French designer who rose to prominence during the post-war years. Born in 1926, Guariche was known for his forward-thinking approach to design, blending aesthetics with functionality. His "G1" wall lamp exemplifies this philosophy with its innovative, then never before seen structure. The design features a dark lacquered metal structure that plays with gravity; gracefully holding a counterweight pendulum, which is both a functional and the main artistic element of the design. On the other side of the counterweight, the lamp is crowned with a double lampshade in perforated and lacquered sheet metal. With its dual light sources, this model provides both direct and indirect lighting, enhanced by the perforated metal. The pierced holes running around the shades serve a decorative role as well. This versatility makes this artistic wall lamp an ideal choice for a variety of settings, from homes to offices. What truly sets this lamp apart is its balancing act; the straight brass rod is connected to the neck stemming from the backplate via a ball joint, making it adjustable in its position. The shades and the brass sphere on the other side teeters carefully to ensure stability while also creating a sense of artistic balance to the design. Guariche's use of materials and the juxtaposition of the dark metal structure with the warm brass and white lacquered inner shade accentuate the lamp's aesthetic appeal. Disderot, the renowned French manufacturer of lighting fixtures, collaborated with Pierre Guariche to produce the "G1" lamp. Disderot was known for its dedication to quality and craftsmanship, and this partnership brought Guariche's design to life with the utmost precision and attention to detail. The combination of Guariche's innovative design sensibilities and Disderot's manufacturing expertise resulted in a one-of-a-kind, iconic piece that has stood the test of time. This lamp remains a symbol of an era when design and functionality were intricately intertwined, making it a timeless icon of the 1950s. Condition: In good vintage condition. • "G30 - The Kite" Floor Lamp by Pierre Guariche, France 1950s
    By Pierre Guariche
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Pierre Guariche is one of the most important designers of the French post-war period. Guariche is best known for the luminaires he designed, many of which feature details like hidden light sources, perforated metal surfaces and slender leg structures. With its clever construction, the “Kite” is a great example of the designer’s endless interest in technological innovation. Officially called model “G30”, this floor lamp was designed in the early 1950s. Guariche’s mid-century lights were created between 1951 and 1959, and are innovatively designed with a visible joy of experimentation. This is especially apparent in this model, featuring elements that may appear purely decorative, but on closer inspection turn out to be absolutely functional. The design is defined by the reflector, which also inspired the model’s nickname. Its white lacquered, perforated sheet metal reflector resembles a boat’s sail, and creates a filtered and soft light. This hidden illuminant and the glare-free light flow by means of the clever reflector provides atmospheric ambient light, while also giving the lamp a sculptural appearance. The light “sail...
