19th Century Exceptional Sang de Boeuf Ox Blood Table Lamp, Decorative Handles

About the Item

The intricately carved handles, or ears of this oxblood lamp cause it to stand out from the field of other lamps of this type. This piece is a 19th century sang de boeuf "Oxblood", red-maroon, glazed table lamp with wood base. Chinese Sang de Boeuf lamps, also known as oxblood lamps or flambé glaze lamps, are a type of traditional Chinese ceramic art that originated during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and reached its peak of popularity in the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). The lamp has the Qing hallmark. The term "Sang de Boeuf" is French for "oxblood," referring to the rich red color of the glaze. These lamps are highly prized for their exquisite craftsmanship and unique glaze effects. The oxblood glaze is achieved through a complex firing process involving copper oxide and other minerals. Chinese Sang de Boeuf lamps typically feature bulbous or pear-shaped bodies with elongated necks, reminiscent of traditional Chinese vases. Due to their historical significance and aesthetic appeal, Chinese Sang de Boeuf lamps have become highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide.
