Large Desk Lamp by Helo Leuchten Germany, 1950s

About the Item

Large Helo table lamp with a very large shade and copper-plated brass areas - a timeless classic from the 1950s. Stylistically, the design of the lamp is based on the Bauhaus period. The lampshade can be adjusted in many ways using a ball joint. The solid lamp is made entirely of metal and painted dark green, the inside of the shade is cream white. The paintwork has clearly suffered, the brass parts give the lamp a noble calm. The desk lamp provides a bright, pleasantly glare-free light thanks to the curved shade and is very solidly manufactured. The design of the round, arched base with the switch is adapted to the shade: profiled brass strips on the edge, the dark green finish on the inside and in the center the slightly arched, also copper-plated brass button, which can be used to release the base. The umbrella is rotated via a ball joint and does not need to be locked, it stays in any position. The ball joint has two screws that can be used to loosen or tighten the joint. The lamp was available in several sizes, the largest version is offered with a 41 cm shade - extremely rare. The lamp is in good vintage condition - paint with signs of aging (matt and stained), the brass parts are partially tarnished - with a very beautiful, age-appropriate patina. Great collector's item! Height approx. 50 cm Foot 21 cm Diameter of shade 41 cm Depth 60 cm Brass socket E 27 Weight 3300g Length of cable 140 cm, with white, slightly yellowed Schuko plug Helo Leuchten Helo was founded in the 1930s by Henry Gerhard Senior as Elektrogeschäfts Helo in the city of Breslau, at that time a German city. Today it is a Polish city named Wroclaw. He fled to Neuburg with his family in 1945 with only a flashlight and some pictures. The three shops were destroyed in a night of bombing. The Helo Leuchten company was registered after World War 2 in 1946 in Neuburg (Neuburg an der Donau). Helo is derived from Henry and his son Lothar. From old war material such as brass and aluminium from the airfield, he begins with the production of work lamps, today we say industrial lighting. The company grows fast and moves twice in a couple of years to the address of today. The company Gebr. Kaiser & Co. Leuchten KG, Lichttechnische Spezialfabrik from Neheim-Hüsten acquires the rights to use the Helo brand and individual models, such as the “commissaire” lamp, the 6631 Luxus. Today (2020) produced by Fritz Hansen. Lothar Gerhard, who took over the company after Henry Gerhard‘s death in 1964, sees himself forced to gradually abandon the factory and transform the company into the trading company it is today. Helo is now owned by Henry Gerhard Junior, his son and since 1980 it is a member of the Expert group.
