Large Grey Desk Lamp with Brass Details by LBL, Germany, 1950s

About the Item

A simple but striking desk lamp with large saucer-shaped shade. Made by LBL dated 1958. Unusual to see a lamp of this style in such a large size (approximately 43cm), the shade is French grey (green-grey) on the outside, and white inside, and the angle can be adjusted through the joint on the lamp-holder. Overall the lamp is in good condition and, due to the size and design of the shade, it gives good task lighting for your office, studio or living space. There are minor signs of wear as one might expect. The brass parts have a nice patina, which could be polished if required, and the lamp is labelled to the underside. Wiring: The wiring has been replaced in recent years and will need to be tested/replaced prior to install to suit your local needs. The single bulb-holder takes an E27 screw-fitting bulb. We recommend the use of a low-heat bulb to protect the fixture for the future. Dimensions: Height 41cm x width 45cm (when shade is horizontal as in the main picture) Depth 43cm (equivalent to the diameter of the shade). The shade will be removed for transit. LBL (short for VEB Leuchtenbau Leipzig) emerged from the Kandem business which was associated with the Bauhaus in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Designers who worked with the company included Marianne Brandt who worked with Christian Dell at the Bauhaus metal-working department.

  • Large Bernard Rooke Table or Floor Lamp with Original Shade
    By Bernard Rooke
    Located in London, GB
A monumental and unusual lamp by British potter, Bernard Rooke. An early piece, probably dating from the 1960s, and initialled BR on the side. Large-scale single-piece Rooke lamps are rare to see - kiln size often a limiting-factor - particularly with an original shade. The base is hand-built, with the lower section finished in a glaze of green/grey. The upper part is glazed showing natural terracotta tones and features raised patterns and piercing, finishing in pierced loops at the top. Both the base and shade are in good original condition, with normal wear from age and use and the hand-making process. A firing crack to the interior flat section of the base appears stable, and is not visible in use. Wiring: The original wiring has been removed and will need to be replaced in the country of install to meet local needs. The lamp-holder takes a bayonet-fitting bulb and we recommend low-heat models to protect this piece for the future. Shade: The lamp has its original shade, which is rare, and this one is an unusual size for Rooke designs. Overall it has retained pretty good shape, with a little "ovalling", minor marks and occasional short crack to the liner. The fitting is a duplex...
