About the Item

A heavy ceramic TOTEM lamp by Bernard Rooke, England. Mid-20th century, England. For notes on shade and wiring see below. The totem is a sculptural statement piece - floor or table size - made up of ceramic elements in natural tones of terracotta and stone. The two-disc element is decorated on each side with a small blue panel, and other elements feature simple markings and decoration. The piece is in good original condition, with age-appropriate signs of wear, and occasional flaws in line with the hand-making and firing process. Shade: the lamp is shown with a simple hand-made shade covered in natural hessian, recently made but based on mid-century styling; in order to install this shade, the lamp will be fitted with a new E27 lamp-holder and shade ring. Wiring: new wiring will be required to suit your local needs and regulations. We advise the use of low heat bulbs. Dimensions (ceramic only): H 75cm W 16cm at base D 14.5cm at base Dimensions (as shown with shade in image 1): H* 127cm Dia 30cm * There is a small variation possible depending on the position of the shade on the lamp-holder. Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural work and early pieces were hand-made using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
