About the Item

Monumental 1960s Gilded Table Lamp by Aldo Londi for Bitossi, Montelupo, Tuscany – Custom Shade An exceptional and rare large-scale ceramic table lamp designed by renowned Italian artist Aldo Londi for Bitossi Ceramiche, Montelupo Fiorentino, Tuscany, dating from the 1960s. This striking piece embodies the sophisticated craftsmanship and artistic experimentation that define mid-century Italian design. The lamp features a richly textured cylindrical ceramic base finished in brilliant gold glaze, intricately incised and stamped with Londi’s signature geometric and floral motifs. The surface plays beautifully with the light, creating a captivating, tactile elegance. This example is in excellent original condition and topped with a bespoke, handcrafted lampshade in a deep-toned textile, perfectly complementing the warm gold body. Measurements: Base only: 64 cm height x 17 cm diameter (≈ 25.2” H x 6.7” D) With shade: 96 cm height x 40 cm diameter (≈ 37.8” H x 15.75” D) About the Designer: Aldo Londi (1911–2003) served as Bitossi’s artistic director from the late 1940s into the 1970s, guiding the company through its most iconic period. A master ceramist, Londi is especially celebrated for his bold forms, experimental glazes, and modernist interpretation of traditional Tuscan pottery. While best known for the “Rimini Blu” series, his gilded and metallic works, like this one, are rarer and prized by collectors for their opulence and sophistication. About the Maker: Founded in the 1920s, Bitossi Ceramiche is a family-run company rooted in the centuries-old ceramic traditions of Montelupo. Under Londi’s direction, Bitossi emerged as a leading name in modern Italian ceramics, collaborating with legendary designers including Ettore Sottsass and Piero Fornasetti. This lamp is a statement piece—ideal for collectors, interior designers, or anyone looking to elevate a space with authentic Italian mid-century artistry. Colors may slightly vary due to photographic lighting sources or your monitor settings. Wear consistent with age and use. The table lamp will be shipped insured overseas in a custom made wooden crate. Cost of insured transport to the US is Euro 425 crate included if we organize the transport which we highly recommend.

Italy has produced some of the greatest furniture designers in the world, such as Achille Castiglioni, Gio Ponti, and Ettore Sottsass. Italian interior design in the 1900s was particularly well-known and grew to the heights of class and sophistication. At first, in the early 1900s, Italian furniture designers struggled to create an equal balance between classical elegance and modern creativity, and initially Italian interior design in the 1910s and 1920s was very similar to that of French Art Deco styles, using exotic materials and creating sumptuous furniture. However, Italian Art Deco reached its pinnacle under Gio Ponti, who made his designs sophisticated, elegant, stylish and refined, but also modern, exotic and creative. In 1926, a new style of furnishing emerged in Italy, known as "Razionalismo", or "Rationalism". The most successful and famous of the Rationalists were the Gruppo 7...
