Table Lamp by Ivan Jakes for Valašské Meziříčí, Bishop Chess Figure, 1970s
By Ivan Jakes
Located in Wrocław, Poland
The chess figures lamps collection was designed by Ivan Jakeš (Czech sculptor, painter, master ceramist and industrial Artist) in 1970s and produced for Osvetlovací Sklo in Valašské Mezirící. They are often characterized as lightning sculpture rather than utilitarian product. His first designs date back to September 1970 and were manufactured in 1971. In a smaller scale, they were introduced in Swedish Göteborg fair in 1972. The author himself reminiscences that these lamps were often used as props in many Czechoslovak movies, often used as interior decor of bourgeois villains. Vintage 1980s Czech 'Old Globe' Black and Red Table Light by Antonín Hepnar
Located in London, GB
A vintage Czech table light designed and made by Antonín Hepnar, circa 1985. The light, made of two separate parts, is constructed from a re-purposed globe and turned wood. One half is lacquered in black the other in red. The materials traditionally associated with the Czech Republic are glass and porcelain. However, Hepar has worked almost exclusively in turned wood since the 1950s. Hepar’s choice of material in combination with his unique approach, limited edition production and the predominance of the Iron Curtain have resulted in his name remaining somewhat obscure. However, Hepnar continues to be one of the most experienced woodworkers in the Czech Republic. His technical experience and background has led to him being approached by a number of architects and designers. Perhaps most sensationally, Hepnar was asked to work on some wooden interior elements of the legendary Hotel Praha...
