Gae Aulenti
The Italian architect and designer Gae Aulenti will forever be best remembered for her work with museums, in particular her 1980–86 renovation of a Beaux Arts Paris train station to create the galleries of the Musée d’Orsay. Aulenti — whose first name, short for Gaetana, is pronounced “guy” — should also be recalled for her tough intellectual spirit and for working steadily when few women found successful architectural careers in postwar Italy.
After she graduated from the Milan Polytechic in 1954, Aulenti opened an architectural office. She also joined the staff of the progressive architectural magazine Casabella, whose editorial line was that the establishment, orthodox modernism of Le Corbusier and the Bauhaus, had outlived it usefulness. When their movement for fresh approaches to architecture and design received a sympathetic hearing, Aulenti found patrons — most prominently Gianni Agnelli, of Fiat, who later employed her to renovate the Palazzo Grassi in Venice for use as an arts exhibition space.
Commissions for showrooms and other corporate spaces brought Aulenti to furniture design. She felt that furniture should never dominate a room. Her chairs and sofas — low-slung, with rounded enameled metal frames and ample seats — and tables, particularly her 1972 marble Jumbo coffee table for Knoll, project solidity and sturdiness. In lighting design, however, Aulenti is bravura. Each work has a marvelous sculptural presence. Pieces such as her Pipistrello table lamp and Quadrifoglio pendant are a perfect marriage of organically shaped glass and high-tech fixtures. Others have a futuristic elegance — and some even have a touch of personality. Aulenti’s Pileino and La Ruspa table lamps each look almost like little robots. Her lighting pieces are an artful grace note in the career of a woman who believed in strength.

- Sculptural Relief Table Lamp by Sculptor 'PH Jean' 1970 Brass Inox Lucite SignedBy Philippe JeanLocated in bergen op zoom, NLImpressive handcrafted, sculptural relief table lamp by French artist and sculptor 'PH Jean'. The four beautiful relief panels, clearly influenced by the 'op art' movement of the period, are all composed from built up layers of white Lucite, stainless steel and brass, there are two different relief pattern designs set front and back and left and right ie matching relief patterns are set on opposing faces to each other , one pair of relief panels have a white Lucite background one of which bears the engraved artists' signature 'PH Jean' and the other two relief panels are set on a stainless steel background. Please refer to detail photos. The small inset base is composed from white Lucite. The lamp has been rewired and still retains the original linen shade but this needs replacing as it is torn and stained and has only been kept as a template from which to make a matching new shade. A classic piece of chic refined French design the kind for design often seen in a Philippe Grange, David Hicks or Francois Catroux interior, would look great alongside other classic French works of the same perios such as Maria Pergay, Philippe Hiquily, Michel Boyer, Guy De Rougemont, Francois Morrelet etc Philippe Jean twice won the "lampe d'or of creation' in France , the gold prize for lighting design and also a silver medal at the 'Salon des artistes Decoratifs' in Paris during this period. Please see image 4 for a copy of an article which confirms these prizes. PH Jean also designed a highly collectable illuminated coffee table for the highly prestigious and renowned Galerie Eric and Xiane Germain, Paris, 1970. The galerie Germain in Paris specialised in hign end, small edition furniture and design art by the best contemporary artists of the 1960s and 1970s including the famous 'siege homme' by Ruth Francken...Category
