Table Lamp Cubosfera by Alessandro Mendini for Fidenza Vetraria, Glass

About the Item

Vintage Italian Lighting - Table Lamp - Sculptural Light - Cubosfera by Alessandro Mendini Born 1931, Alessandro Mendini has been one of the founding fathers of contemporary Italian design. Amongst his most famous products are the Proust armchair and the countless little figures he designed for Alessi, ranging from corckscrews to salt and pepper shakers. Many of the pieces he created are now true icons of pop culture, but some have somehow flew under the radar to remain niche objects that only a few connoisseurs know. But, bear in mind, this certainly wasn't because they are less deserving than the others! One of such pieces certainly is the Cubosfera lamp (Cube-sphere), a design of Mendini's early career having been penned in 1968 for Italian glassmaker Fidenza Vetraria with a glass pressing process. Looking at the piece, its name quickly becomes obvious: the lamp is indeed a glass cube with a hollowed sphere at the core, where two light bulbs find place. The decorated bolt on top can be unscrewed to reveal the core and to replace the light bulbs if needed. The precise manufacturing technique ensures the top and bottom half perfectly match (see side shots). The lamp, exceedingly rare and sought-after, is surprisingly well preserved with no signs of chipping or dents despite being fifty-five years old. It is in perfect working conditions and comes on an Italian 220v plug. • Vintage Italian 600 table lamp by Gino Sarfatti for Arteluce, black body & base
    By Gino Sarfatti, Arteluce
    Located in Milano, IT
Founded in 1936 by italian designer Gino Sarfatti, Arteluce has been one of the most influential brands in italian mid-century lighting. The production of the company covered every genre of lamps, from floor and table ones to sconces and ceiling lights. The reference numbers showed a methodical organisation, with numbers starting from 100 for sconces, 500 for table lamps, 1000 for floor lamps, 2000 for chandeliers and 3000 for ceiling lights. The present lamp has reference number 600, and is indeed a table lamp. It is characterised by the funny leather bag at the base: filled with sand, it works as a weight, and allows the lamp to be placed at several different angles on the table. It is a very rare and sought after piece designed by Sarfatti himself. Preserved in very good conditions, the original...
