About the Item

Wrought Iron Lamp “Vine and Grape” – Muller Frères Lunéville – Art Deco, Circa 1930 A stunning French Art Deco lamp, crafted around 1930 by the renowned Muller Frères of Lunéville, celebrated master glassmakers of the era. This rare piece stands out for its wrought iron mount, delicately designed with a naturalistic vine and grape motif, executed with exceptional finesse. The sculptural base reflects the organic forms typical of the Art Deco movement, while paying tribute to the skilled craftsmanship of early 20th-century ironworkers. It is topped with an elegant moulded pressed glass shade, delicately frosted and signed “Muller Frères Lunéville”. The contrast between the softness of the glass and the strength of the wrought iron creates a striking visual harmony. • Origin: France • Period: Circa 1930 • Materials: Wrought iron and moulded pressed glass • Signature: Muller Frères Lunéville (on the glass shade) • Dimensions: Height 46 cm – Width 20 cm – Depth 26 cm • Condition: Excellent. Carefully restored: metal stripped, treated and patinated; new electrification to current standards. A truly exceptional piece for discerning collectors or enlightened lovers of Art Deco. Muller Frères of Lunéville –History: Muller Frères is an iconic name in both Art Nouveau and Art Deco design, celebrated for its artistic glass creations and exceptional lighting fixtures. Founded in Lunéville, in the Lorraine region of France, the company became one of the great names in French glassmaking, alongside Daum and Gallé. Origins: The Muller story begins with a talented family passionate about the art of glass. The Muller brothers—nine siblings in total—grew up in a region known for its glassmaking traditions. Several of them, including Henri, Camille, Désiré, Eugène, and Victor, dedicated their lives to glass art and trained in the studios of renowned masters, most notably with Émile Gallé in Nancy. This experience gave them a deep mastery of sophisticated techniques and helped them develop their own artistic identity. The Founding of the Workshop (circa 1895–1910): By the late 19th century, the brothers established their own workshop in Lunéville, near Nancy. They specialized in producing vases, bowls, lamps, and chandeliers made from engraved, blown, and sometimes enameled glass. Their style, inspired by nature, embraced the Art Nouveau movement’s love of floral motifs, organic forms, and delicate details. The Height of Success: Transition to Art Deco (1920s): As tastes evolved in the early 20th century, the Muller Frères adapted to the Art Deco style, characterized by more geometric lines and abstract patterns. They developed innovative collections and focused increasingly on indoor lighting: chandeliers, sconces, and table lamps, often combined with wrought iron or bronze mounts. Their command of blown pâte-de-verre and acid-etching techniques allowed them to create works of remarkable quality, featuring subtle color gradients and unique textures. Each piece was typically signed “Muller Frères Lunéville,” a mark of authenticity and excellence. Decline and Legacy: Like many artisanal firms, Muller Frères suffered from the economic crises and disruptions of World War II, and the business gradually declined until its eventual closure in the mid-20th century. Today, however, Muller Frères’ creations are highly sought-after by collectors and art enthusiasts. Their work features in private collections and museum holdings alike, a lasting testament to their craftsmanship and influence on the history of French glassmaking. Muller Frères Lunéville remains a symbol of French glass artistry—synonymous with elegance, innovation, and excellence.
