About the Item
Vivai del Sud four-panel bamboo palm trees mirrored screen from the 'Parma' series, Italy, 1970s. This exquisite screen consists of handmade pencil reed bamboo laid as a palm tree motif with intricate reed inlay on a mirrored screen. These panels are expertly constructed from a padding over a wooden structure. On the front panels are mirrors and palm tree profiles made of bamboo (rattan) with the backs completely and elegantly lined in flat bamboo reeds. Because of the finished back of this screen, it can also serve as a room divider. Or the screen can also be split up into a pair of two-panel mirrored screens.
In the spirit of Vivai del Sud, the use of trompe l'oeil in this screen creates an atmosphere of an oasis created by a presence of a palm trees. These incredibly chic screens were all handmade and only produced in the 1970s and are highly sought these days for their incredible craftsmanship and highly decorative design.
Vivai del Sud was a Roman company established in 1950 as a specialist in landscape gardening, reconstruction of the territory, restoration of large historical parks as well as design of bold "Jardin d'hiver" on terraces and attics of historic centers in Italy and abroad. During the 1970s, Vivai del Sud established itself as a leader in the field of the manufacture of high-end furniture and accessories for indoor and outdoor use. It was founded by Piero di Pierri with the assistance of his brothers Giorgio and Gianfranco who were involved in the multitude of activities associated with the brand. The company’s activities spanned a wide range of sectors: from design to interior decoration on commission for villas and hotels; from the architecture of gardens to the production of exclusive furniture distributed all-over the world. Vivai del Sud specialized in design, promoting a cultured and sophisticated “Roman style”. During this period, Italian magazines in the sector - from Casa Vogue to Gran Bazaar and from Domus to L’Architettura - devoted articles and covers to the furniture produced by Vivai del Sud.

Vivai del Sud
Combining the opulence of Italian Baroque art, the grandeur of Roman classicism and the clean sophistication of mid-century modernism, Vivai del Sud’s designs have an utterly recognizable look. Carefully crafted, limited edition floor mirrors, credenzas, sofas and other pieces echo the elegance of Hollywood Regency style while incorporating playful inspiration from the design team’s Italian heritage.
Brothers Giorgio, Gianfranco and Piero di Pierri founded Vivai del Sud in Rome in 1950. Established first as a landscape design firm, its early work included designing modern winter gardens throughout Italy as well as restoring historic parks. Building on this success, Vivai del Sud expanded in 1970 with a new focus on interior decoration and furniture design.
Originally from the Italian region of Puglia, the brothers were inspired by Italian Baroque artists and Roman architecture, using classical themes and mythological motifs in their furniture designs. Vivai del Sud built an international audience for its inimitable pieces, opening branches in Italy, France, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and West Africa.
Vivai del Sud later added architectural design to its practice, designing luxury hotels as well as residential buildings. The company has also published magazines and books of poetry.
Vivai del Sud’s work has garnered international acclaim, with features in Domus, Casa Vogue and other major publications.
