Antique 19th Century French Pair of Oval Gold Gilt Mirrors with Bow Tied Ribbon

About the Item

This beautiful pair of antique mirrors were made in Northern France at the end of the 19th century, circa 1890. These classic oval Louis Seize or Empire mirrors are decorated with a bow-tied ribbon on top and a ribbed frame. These decorations are typical of the Louis XVI style. The mirrors are gold gilt and patinated. The most elevated parts were gold leaf gilt and the rest was gilt by the use of gold paint. This paint was made by solving gold dust in clear varnish. The two-tone gold finish adds definition to the frame and is common on mirrors from Northern France. Both mirrors are in great condition. The glass and period pine back cladding are renewed in our atelier. The mirrors are solid, without damage, and ready for use.

Condition:

Repaired: Small repairs to one of the tied riboons was done in our atelier. Replacements made: Both mirror plates were renewed and a protective pine back cladding was added. Wear consistent with age and use.
