Arts and Crafts Wall Mirrors

ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Dutch Arts & Crafts Hand Hammered Copper Oval Wall Mirror of Practical Size 1910
Located in Lisse, NL
Early 1900s artistic design Arts & Crafts wall mirror. This all-handcrafted, practical size Arts & Crafts antique with its original mirror is an absolute joy to own and look at. The unusual and attractive asymmetrical design of the embossed decoration at the bottom makes this hand hammered copper specimen stand out from anything we ever saw. The hand-crafted out of one piece of copper frame has an aesthetic beauty that you either see and recognize or you don't. There usually is no gray area and somehow the creators and the people who loved and bought (and still buy) those creations have something in common that is hard to put into words. We believe it has to do with a certain level of consciousness. The combination of the unique design and the marvelous patina of the beautiful copper AND the superb condition of the original mirror, makes this an absolute gem to come home to. By the way, the original mirror is in such remarkable condition, also, thanks to the zinc back plate. The zinc has protected the back of the mirror from corroding. On the zinc backplate of this mirror is the sticker of the French art dealer who offered this rare Arts and Crafts mirror to his undoubtedly well-to-do 'clientele' If you like this unique and completely original Dutch Arts and Crafts mirror (in the manner of Conrad Fehn...

The mask and the mirror are both typical Venetian artistic products: combining the two creates a new mask which maintains the decorative details typical of the antique Venetian mirror while downplaying any seriousness with irony and levity. These playful, exuberant and riotously colorful wall mirrors are produced by an illustrious family of master Venetian glassmakers, prominent for centuries as the finest glass artisans in the world, known today as Barbini Specchi Veneziani. Hand Carved Arts & Crafts Style Wall Mirror with Gold Painted Thistle Sculptures
Located in Lisse, NL
Striking wall mirror with handcarved 'blue thistles'. Via one of our foreign contacts we recently purchased this perfectly realistic thistle sculptures wall mirror. This all handcarved wooden frame displays a group of blue thistles (as they are called) and these very well carved wild flowers are gold painted which makes them stand out perfectly against the stained wooden background. We date this finest workmanship mirror to the midcentury era (1960s or 1970s) and apart from some minor fading of the original, beveled mirror itself, it could not be in better condition. Thanks to the brass brackets on the back mounting this stylish and artistic piece won't take more than a few minutes. Thanks to its unique design, this mirror could look the part in an Art Deco, in an Arts and Crafts, but also in a midcentury interior. It even has a touch of Hollywood Regency in it. If you already have a place and space in mind for this unique and highly decorative mirror then maybe you should be its next custodian. Especially with perfect packing and worldwide delivery from our store to your door (in just 4 days) included in our fair price, this one of a kind, Arts and Crafts style mirror...
