18th Century Italian Walnut Wood Pulpit Canopy
Located in Dallas, TX
This large and attractive architectural piece is known as a pulpit canopy. Before the advent of microphones and speakers, orators would often address assemblies from elevated platforms known as “wine glass pulpits”. These podiums featured domed roofs called abat-voix, sometimes known as sounding boards, that would project sound outwards. Our walnut wood pulpit canopy is a fine example of such a device. Hand-carved and hand-painted in Italy in the 1700’s, our abat-voix is roughly octagonal in shape. Each of the sides have edges with luxuriously thick step molding, alternating between stained and gilded wood. Each of the corner cornices are adorned with gilded flower carvings, although some are missing. The interior of the canopy features a gilded open sun with sinuous rays emanating all around. Each of the sides are adorned with foliate margents surrounded by scrolls, again with some losses. All the edges are bordered with a thin layer of gilding. Although our fascinating 18th century Italian walnut pulpit canopy was designed for a church pulpit...

Jug and Shaving Basin Set. Silver. Juan De San Fauri, Madrid, 1768
Located in Madrid, ES
Jug set with basin made in silver in its color. The basin has the usual curve to place it in the neck (notch), and a profile throughout the piece of fine smooth moldings (drawing scrolls in the piece) following the curves and peaks that are drawn in the outline of the same and they extend towards the bottom, which remains smooth. The jug has an oval base with slight curves and a body divided into two areas (wider in its lower half, thin in the upper) with a series of "segments" curved; the peak shows a simple architectural decoration and smooth areas; the handle a curve with volutes and a contracurva vegetable (drawing both a spice of "S" inverted); the cover follows the lines of the body and is topped with a vegetable form. The contrast marks of the pieces place the manufacture of the same in Madrid (punches of Villa and Court with the number 68), giving the date of 1768. The silversmith seems to have been Juan de San Fauri, who works towards mideighteenth century in Madrid. With Philip V many French influences arrived at the silver, along with some Italian influences, both from the hand of artisans of these origins and from pieces. It continues with a scarce marking in the works except in the important centers, like Madrid, and the civil typologies acquired great importance. As in the rest of the country, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical trends coexisted in the Court, although, being the center that set the tone for the rest, the first moves away soon, introduces the Rococo before 1740 or on that date, and the Neoclassicism towards 1770 (imposing gradually since 1780). The curved forms of the basin are reminiscent of the so-called "contours" that were characteristic of eighteenth-century Rococo silverware and very frequent, especially in plates and trays. However, especially in the case of the jug, it is possible to speak of a certain relationship with Neoclassical models. As for the jug, it follows the most common prototype since the arrival of the Bourbons, characterized by its European influence and the great difference it shows with the type known as "jug de pico". Compare this game with the Francisco García vinajera (inventory 03487) of the Cerralbo Museum in Madrid or with the copy of Medina-Sidonia (code 59906, Catalog of the Andalusian Furniture...

Antique, New and Vintage Bedroom Sets

The simple fact that everyone sleeps is great news for those in search of an antique, new or vintage bedroom set. A good night’s rest is a universal necessity, which means that there is an abundance of options to meet everyone’s tastes and decor styles.

While the design of beds was once largely informed by the availability of local materials, modern-day consumers can relish the freedom of mixing and matching their favorite furniture styles from around the globe. Springing for a European bedroom set might mean introducing a royalty-inspired resting haven to your home, one outfitted with a plush, elaborately adorned upholstered headboard that gives new meaning to the terms “king-” and “queen-size” beds. Mid-century modern bedroom sets, with their sleek and streamlined bed frames and unassuming walnut nightstands, might also defy notions of standard bedroom furniture given the venturesome design sensibilities that we’ve come to associate with the style.

Targeting the designs of a specific location lets you take a vacation every time you nap. Italian designers, who upholstered headboards and ashwood or cherry bed frames in varying fabrics and leathers, have introduced luxurious bedroom sets over the years, while the decoratively carved dark walnut antique bedroom sets designed in France in the Louis XVI style have never lost their allure centuries later.

For those who love to host, your guest rooms can treat visitors to a one-of-a-kind experience. Build an atmosphere, be it moody or bright, by pairing pieces that share a single color or commit to a specific era. Dazzle with the dark woods that define the dressing tables and armoires of the Art Deco era or immerse your guests in the glitz and wealth of mirrored finishes and bold color contrasts that characterize a Hollywood Regency bedroom set, a movement in design led by unsung interior decorator Dorothy Draper in the 1920s.

Whatever your needs might be, you should sleep in style. Find a wide-ranging collection of antique, new and vintage bedroom sets on 1stDibs.
