Bed by Jean Prouvé from France, 1936

About the Item

Bed entirely lacquered in red-blood color. Furniture designed in 1934-1935 for the sanatorium of Guébriant and sponsored by the French Army to the architects Abraham and Jacques Henri Le Même. Jules Leleu was the decorator. The Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) workshop 50, rue des jardinières in Nancy, France also produced the sash windows and railings for the balconies and equipped 146 rooms. Each bedroom was furnished with a built-in bedside bed, a hanging desk, a chair, a two-tray pedestal table and a visitor chair. All in folded sheet, except for the curved tube pedestal. All this furniture was made by the Jean Prouvé workshop in Nancy. The beds and desks are also designed by Jean Prouvé. By cons, it is likely that the chairs, armchairs, pedestal tables are designed by the architect Jacques Henri Le Même or Jules Leleu, originally commissioned by the French Army. The visitor chair is certainly designed by Jules Leleu. The longitudinal members and the bed base are identical in all respects to those used for the 1932 Cité Universitaire de Nancy beds. The fixings are also the same. Many other details of construction, both on the bed and on the desk, evoke other furniture more known to Jean Prouvé. It is besides shortly after the success of the furniture of the University City of Nancy, that the J. Prouvé workshop developed the sanatorium furniture. They participated in competitions and furnished the furniture for the various Alpine sanatoriums of Abraham and Jacques Henri Le Même. A set of this furniture is preserved at the Museum of the 1930s in Boulogne Billancourt. Condition of use. Shards on the paintings. Dimensions: H 91; L 200; L 133 cm. Provenance: Sanatorium of Guébriant (Savoie).
