Copy 21 of 250 numbered copies on hand-made Maillol paper and SIGNED BY THE ARTIST on the colophon, with 52 original woodcuts, and 4 woodcut initials, printed in bistre; leading and bottom edges deckled. Full vellum with laced-in thongs, gilt lettering on spine, faint; pencil notations and tipped in label from earlier booksellers on inside front cover, edges stained on first 2 and last 2 blanks.
EXTRA SUITE of 45 WOODCUTS in a separate vellum portfolio, printed in black.
Fine copy in simple cardboard slipcase.
Colophon: "Aristide Maillol engraved with his own hand the wood-cuts which illustrate this book, The text is that of Thronley's translation of 1657, revised and augmented. This is a brand new (apart from volume 1/2 which is in a mylar cover for protection there is a 1cm tear in the front top left hand corner) still in cellophane complete 18 volume set (published as 17 because 1 and 2 form the first volume). Originally published by Charles Moreau between 1937 and 1960 in portfolio form, these reprints from 2005 have been published as oblong quarto books, this is an important work which traces the trends and fashions of The Salon des Artistes Decorateurs which is basically the history of French furniture in the 20th century. Since opening JAR in 1978, with the help of his Swiss friend Pierre Jeannet, Joel Arthur Rosenthal, has become one of the world's most sought after jewellery designers.
A native New Yorker, Rosenthal moved to Paris after graduating from Harvard and has lived in the city for most of his adult life. He experimented in scriptwriting and then needlepoint, opening a shop where he experimented with unusually coloured yarns. It's clientele included designers from Herme`s and Valentino. Rosenthal was one day asked if he could design a mount for a gemstone, setting his career in a new direction.
