In original red cloth pictorial binding with gilt titles to spine. With a tipped-in James Longstreet signed card. Presentation inscription from Capt. O. E. Morse to W. A. Jenkins. Presented with a new archival red cloth slipcase. Presented is a first edition 1896 printing of Lieutenant General James Longstreet’s memoir, From Manassas to Appomattox: Memoirs of the Civil War in America. Published by J. B. Lippincott Company in 1896, this book has its original red cloth pictorial boards with a hand carrying a sword and gilt titles to the spine. Tipped into the front free end page is a James Longstreet signed card. The signature reads “Yours Truly, James Longstreet” in black ink. The book also has a presentation inscription on the same page from Capt. O. E Morse to W. A. Jenkins, both members of the Fifth Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry as line officers in the Civil War. In his memoir From Manassas to Appomattox, Lieutenant General James Longstreet recounts key battles, stories, and defines his role as a Confederate General in Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Ever the soldier, he overlooks much of his personal life to focus on battle strategies, war accounts, and opinions regarding other officers. The principle subordinate under General Robert E. Lee, Longstreet provides several accounts of Lee's leadership and their strong partnership. An invaluable firsthand account of life during the Civil War, From Manassas to Appomattox not only illuminates the life and ambitions of Lieutenant General James Longstreet, but it also offers an in-depth view of army operations within the Confederacy. "Longstreet's tome is a milestone of great importance in Confederate literature. It tells the story of the war in the first person from one of the great generals of American history, allows him to make his case, and at least on some accounts quiets the armchair strategists who have faulted Longstreet too severely. In the main, Longstreet is correct with most of his assertions…[and] here provides ample documentation of his close relationships with Lee" (Eicher 277). The book has a presentation inscription on the blank front free endpaper from Capt. O. E. Morse to W. A. Jenkins. The inscription reads, in full: “To my much esteemed Companion in Arms during the War of the rebellion Capt. O. E. Morse, This book is presented as a slight testimonial of my fraternal regard and friendship, born of a mutual sharing of the dangers and hardships incident of that war, that will be as enduring as the life of W. A. Jenkins, Chicago, Oct. 3. 1896.” Both men entered the Fifth Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry as line officers. Orlin E Morse came to Kansas in 1857 to fight for the Free State. After more than three years fighting in the Civil War, he mustered out as a Captain and returned to his home in Mound City, Kansas, where he lived until his death in 1917. Wilton A. Jenkins mustered out as a Lt. Colonel. Condition: Very good condition. Thick octavo, original red pictorial cloth boards with hand holding a sword in silver, gold, and grey embossed on front, gilt titles to spines. With a tipped in James Longstreet signed card to the front free end paper. Signature reads: “Yours Truly, James Longstreet” in black ink. Paper lightly toned. Small clipping affixed to bottom left of card, identifying Genl. James Longstreet. Signed card measures 2 3/4" x 5”W. Presentation inscription on blank front free end paper from Capt. O. E. Morse to W. A Jenkins. Inscription in black ink, now slightly faded. Inscription is legible. Interior pages in very good condition. Frontispiece portrait, 16 maps, and 30 illustrations of battle sites and portraits. Presented with a new custom archival slipcase in red cloth with inlaid portrait of General Longstreet on front.
