The publication accompanies an exhibition at Gallery BAC in New York City running from October 20th to November 19th. With over thirty objects on display, the exhibit is the first to consider the work of ground-breaking designer Jean-Michel Frank in Argentina, focusing on his collaboration with the decoration and cabinetmaking firm Comte. The publication contains an historical essay with archival photography, a catalogue of the pieces in the exhibition, and reprinted articles. Jean-Michel Frank (1895-1941) was one of the most original and influential designers of the 20th century. In the 1920s and 1930s, he developed a following among Parisian cognoscenti for his signature look, which featured radically simplified furniture designs and minimalist interiors. In Argentina, against the backdrop of a boom economy, interior designer Ignacio Pirovano proved to be the most effective international champion of Frank's work. In 1932 Pirovano founded the firm Comte with his brother, architect Ricardo Pirovano, and architects José Enrique Tívoli and Mariano Mansilla Moreno to provide decorating services for the local market. Initially, Comte imported Frank's pieces for projects, but in 1936 the firm entered into a licensing agreement to produce his designs locally. In 1940, Frank fled Europe and immigrated to Argentina, where he briefly held the mantle of creative director for Comte until his untimely death the following year. The publication contains seldom seen photography of Comte interiors using Frank models and Frank's own interior design work in Argentina both from abroad and later working for Comte. Featuring 82 archival and lush colour photographs. 120 pages. text in English. 540 grams. Paperback.
