Julian Schnabel gained fame in the 1980s as a leading representative of American Neo-Expressionism. He combined representational painting with unusual materials, which he nailed, glued or screwed onto his paintings. canvases covered with smashed porcelain dishes, truck tarpaulins or cowhides as a painting surface became his trademark.
