Kiki and Montparnasse 1900-1930, French Book by Billy Kluver, 1989

About the Item

Kiki et Montparnasse 1900-1930 (Kiki and Montparnasse 1900-1930), a French book by Billy Kluver and Julie Martin. Kiki Montparnasse or the ennobled bohemian. The surprising story tells when a bohemian genius made a district of Paris the capital of arts and letters. Alice Ernestine Prin (1901 ? 1953), nicknamed the Queen of Montparnasse and often known as Kiki de Montparnasse, was a French model during the Jazz Age. She flourished and helped define the liberated culture of Paris in the so-called Roaring Twenties. She became one of the most famous models of the 20th century and in the history of avant-garde art. She was the professional muse of Man Ray and others. One wonders if they didn't coin the term "Muse" for her. She is crazy and is the ultimate woman of this boho period. The book is about the artists, writers, and entertainers in and around Montparnasse. Kiki was a part of that crowd. More than an impressive collection of captioned photos from its golden age, this is also a history of Montparnasse. The 1st illustration is a map of the neighborhood circa 1380. The last eight pages are detailed current maps showing the location and years of occupation of clubs, studios, cafes, and residences. This book is exemplary among books describing this period's art and literary scene. Billy Kluver and Julie Martin emphasize "the reliance on factual information and the visual density of the photographs" in the preface. They are the foundation of this in-depth and fascinating exploration of Montparnasse. Extensive photos capture places, people, and art of Montparnasse, many of which came from private collections. Also, the writing is equally as revealing, sharing anecdotes and details from varied sources, including interviews with members of this community. Kiki is prominent throughout the book, although many other notables are profiled. The authors go to great lengths to describe her life, personality, and essence. This dedication and passion are evident throughout this excellent depiction of the artists and lovers who made this community extraordinary. The book recreates life in the tumultuous world of 1900-1930 Montparnasse. This book presents photographs of legendary figures, like Modigliani, Picasso, Satie, Matisse, Leger, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, and Miro. Gossip and anecdotes aim to bring this world alive. This is a beautiful coffee table art book. Features: Title: Kiki et Montparnasse 1900-1930. Author: Billy Kluver and Julie Martin. Hardcover book. Language: French. Paris Secret et Insolite (Secret and Unusual Paris), French book by Rodolphe Trouilleux. Under the cobblestones, surprises: forgotten dead-ends, a cloister converted into workshops, a real-fake medieval house, the slabs of the guillotine, a 17th-century metro, a mineral water fountain, a tiny house, a miraculous Vespasian, a chapel in spare parts, Russian isbas, hidden gardens, revolutionary inscriptions, a forgotten cannonball, a working-class town in the upscale neighborhoods, a fashionable ox, abandoned convents, a washhouse facade, a bastion on the fortifications, an itinerant chapel, a pierced castle, sleeping villas, a lemon tree in a telephone booth, that's Paris! The French capital has not finished revealing its mysteries: a Palladian villa, a 15th-century tower, an acclimatization square, rats nibbling on a facade, an old Protestant cemetery, a medieval sign...

1925 The Memory Years, French Book by Editions Larousse, 1988
By Modern History
Located in Atlanta, GA
1925, Les Années-Mémoire (1925, The Memory Years), French book by Editions Larousse, 1988. Relive the year 1925 as if you were there. This volume will make you relive, with emotion, the facts and events of the interwar period. Because that year, in France, we hear everywhere humming, "When We Are Two, It's Not The Same Thing" by Maurice Chevalier. Street music and music hall contribute to a good mood. And yet, the economic situation is hardly smiling, and the French government knows many setbacks: in April, Edouard Herriot yields his place as president of the Council to Paul Painlevé, and in October, Aristide Briand, in his turn, replaces it. Inflation in Germany is still rife, and the mark value is almost zero. 1925 is also rich in artistic and sporting events. American crews completed the first circumnavigation of the globe by plane in 175 days. French actor Michel Simon is first seen in Marcel L'Herbier's film "Feu Mathias Pascal." Classical music is not to be outdone, Maurice Ravel composes Tzigane, and Honegger triumphs with his King David. A new phenomenon, sport fascinates more and more French people and attracts many followers. Our tennis players excel at Wimbledon while the All Blacks come to give us a rugby lesson. In Monaco, we happily celebrate Louis II...

Billy Baldwin: The Great American Decorator by Adam Lewis (Book)
Located in North Yorkshire, GB
The definitive book on the legendary decorator Billy Baldwin, known as the "Dean of American Decorating," famous for his classical taste, streamlined modernism, and brilliant use of colour. In the tradition of Rizzoli’s Albert Hadley and David Hicks, this is the first fully illustrated account of the career of Billy Baldwin (1903–1983), one of the most important decorators of the twentieth century, whose work has influenced contemporary designers from Bunny Williams to Jeffrey Bilhuber. A native of Baltimore, Baldwin’s work caught the eye of eminent New York decorator Ruby Ross Wood. She invited him to join her firm, saying his work stood out "like a beacon of light in the boredom of the houses around it." Baldwin’s style was a revelation—simultaneously classical and modernist, tailored and clean, yet dramatically coloured, and above all American. An enemy of clutter and conspicuous wealth, he favoured natural materials and comfortable furniture. The drama in his rooms often came from colour, as seen in the dark brown lacquered walls of Cole Porter’s library or the scarlet cotton print that covered Diana Vreeland’s apartment. Immensely charming, Baldwin was a popular addition to the high society of New York. His clients included Bill and Deeda Blair, Babe and Bill Paley...
