Washington's Farewell Address to the People of the United States. Springfield: Thomas Dickman for the Washington Benevolent Society, 1812. Presented is Washington's Farewell Address to the People of the United States, printed in 1812 by Thomas Dickman for the Washington Benevolent Society. The Farewell Address is bound in its original hardcover boards with brown leather spine and gilt title. It retains its original Washington Benevolent Society membership form, accomplished in manuscript for John Hamilton of Chester, PA. Written by Alexander Hamilton with a few sections by James Madison, Washington’s famed Farewell Address was never publicly delivered. Rather, it first appeared printed in the Philadelphia newspaper, American Daily Advertizer on September 19, 1796, with the title: "The Address of General Washington To The People of The United States on his declining of the Presidency of the United States." This was an important decision, as explained by biographer Ron Chernow, “while Washington could have informed Congress of his resignation, he went instead to the source of all sovereignty, the people, just as the Constitutional Convention had bypassed state legislatures and asked the people to approve the document directly through ratifying conventions.” The Address begins with Washington’s decision to not seek re-election for a third presidential term. He explains his reasoning and then goes on to offer his advice, “the disinterested warnings of a parting friend,” to the American people. Washington emphasizes the importance of unity and morality, while also warning against geographical sectionalism, political factionalism, and the "insidious wiles of foreign influence." The reaction to the address was mostly positive, printed in many regional newspapers and then later as separate pamphlets and broadsides throughout the United States. This is one such example, printed by Thomas Dickman for the Washington Benevolent Society in 1812. The Washington Benevolent Societies were grassroots political clubs operating in the Northeastern United States, from 1808 to 1816. The first society was founded in New York, as a charitable organization. But later the societies became more political, aligned with the Federalist Party. Printed copies of Washington's Farewell address were given to new members. This bound pamphlet has the original member page for John Hamilton of Chester, PA. CONDITION: Original hardcover boards with brown leather spine and gilt title. Gilt is faded. Original boards with wear, bumping, and scratches due to age. Light conservation touch-ups to boards. Partly-printed Washington Benevolent Society form accomplished in manuscript for John Hamilton of Chester, PA, signed by John Barrett, president, and Charles Bowen, Secretary. Stipple engraved frontispiece portrait engraved by Gimbrede. Interior pages in good condition, save scattered foxing and overall age toning to paper. 40pp. Presented with a new archival cloth slipcase. Book Dimensions: 5 7/16" H x 3 1/2" W x 7/16" D. Slipcase Dimensions: 5 13/16" H x 3 3/4" W x 13/16" D. Accompanied by our company's letter of authenticity.

1812 "United States of Nth America -- Carte des Etats-Unis De L'Amerique Septentrionale" Two-Sheet Map by Tardieu This attractive map, published in Paris in 1812, is one of the most rare large format maps from the period. It features a view of the East Coast of the U.S. from Maryland to just below South Carolina. Additionally, Ellicott’s plan for the City of Washington D.C. is included at the top right and an illustration of Niagara Falls is shown at the bottom right with a description in both French and English. This extremely detailed map not only depicts the mountainous regions of the southeastern U.S., but also includes names of regions, rivers, and towns. Based on the first state of Arrowsmith’s 4-sheet map of the United States, this map is completely engraved by Tardieu in Paris and showcases high quality engravings. This detailed map of the recently independent United States includes one of the largest and earliest examples of the Ellicott plan of Washington DC. The artist, Pierre François Tardieu (PF Tardieu) was a very well-known map engraver, geographer, and illustrator.
