The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths by John Adair
Located in valatie, NY
The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths by John Adair. 1962, University of Oklahoma Press. Hardcover with dust jacket. Probably no Native American handicraft are more widely admired than Navajo weaving and Navajo and Pueblo silver work. This book contains the most important and complete account of Indian jewelry fashioned by the Navajo, the Zuni, the Hopi, and other Pueblo peoples. The author has told the story of his several years' investigation of jewelry making among the Southwestern Indians. With the use of decorative plates the narrative is has a very visual experience. John Adair is a trained ethnologist who has lived and worked among these Indians. He has done an exhaustive examination of the principal museum collections of Navajo and Pueblo silver work, both early and modem, in Santa Fe, Colorado Springs, Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia. He visited trading posts in the Indian country and examined and photographed silver on the pawn racks and in important private collections. He lived for a time among the Navajo, watched them make their jewelry, and actually learned to work silver himself under one of the leading artisans, Tom Burnsides. Many of the photographs he made at the time are used as illustrations in this book. As field worker for the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, he studied the economics of Navajo and Pueblo silversmithing; and still later he became manager of the Navajo Arts and Crafts Guild, a tribal enterprise. The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths provides a full history of the craft and the actual names and localities of the pioneer craftsmen who introduced the art of the silversmith to them. Despite its present high stage of development, with its many subtle and often exquisite designs, the art of working silver is not an ancient one among the Navajo and Pueblo Indians. There are men still living today who remember the very first silversmiths. Mr. Adair gives full details of the methods and techniques of a primitive forge with homemade tools. He tells both of the fine pieces made for trade among the Indians themselves and of the newer, cheaper types of jewelry produced for sale to tourists. He discusses standards and qualities of Indian silver and describes the work of the Indian schools in helping preserve traditional design in the fine silver of today. His excellent photographs of some of the most notable pieces, old and new, provide examples for evaluation. This book will serve the layman, the ethnologist, and the dealer alike as a guide to establish proper values in Indian silver jewelry...

"Three Chiefs, Blackfoot, Montana" by Edward S. Curtis, Platinum Print, 1900
By Edward S. Curtis, 1868-1952
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a rare, platinum Master Exhibition Print of Edward Curtis’ The Three Chiefs. Typical of Curtis’ Master Exhibition Prints, this platinum print is double-mounted, signed, with an embossed copyright credit and date stamp. His numeric notation “52-00” is in the photographic negative. Curtis photographed The Three Chiefs during his two weeks on a Blackfoot reservation in the summer of 1900. The photograph depicts three Piegan men in traditional dress on horseback, situated next to a small stream with an expansive cloud-filled sky behind them. The Piegans were the largest group in the Blackfoot Confederacy and still retained a majority of their original culture when Curtis visited the tribe. It reportedly took Curtis several days to find the perfect prairie backdrop and riders for this photo, yet his patience paid off. The image was pivotal in enabling Curtis to form his vision for his next project - his ambitious 20 volumes “North American Indian”publication. This print is believed to be one of only three oversized, platinum Master Exhibition Prints of this image in existence. It was printed by Curtis specifically for his East Coast exhibition tour of 1905-1906. Curtis chose only a small number of what he believed to be his finest negatives to produce prints for the show. He never again mounted an exhibition of his work, nor produced such distinctive, large-format platinum prints. “The extraordinary rarity of The Three Chiefs becomes clearer when viewed in the context of other Master Exhibition Prints, principally the 108 in the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, the largest collection in existence. The Museum, however, is missing a number of early, iconic images, including The Three Chiefs. It has long been assumed that these missing prints were held elsewhere, possibly in the collection of The New York Public Library. This theory has been substantiated by the Curtis scholar, Bruce Kapson, who unearthed a cache of letters from Curtis to J.P. Morgan and to Morgan's librarian, Ms. Bella da Costa Greene in the Pierpont Morgan Library archives in 2007. The correspondence establishes that 58 of the 100 prints in The New York Public Library's collection are actually Master Exhibition Prints, specifically selected by Curtis for J.P. Morgan as the best examples of his work. A typed letter, dated March 1907, from Ms. Greene to Curtis states: 'I enclose herewith a list of Indian photographs which you sent to Mr. J.P. Morgan'. The letter is accompanied by a handwritten list of 58 photographs, including The Three Chiefs (print number 52.) Morgan donated this group of prints to The New York Public Library in 1912.” (Christie’s Live Auction 1893 Catalog, 2007). Curtis’ platinum prints make up less than 1/2 of 1% of all of the work he created. Curtis’ platinum prints were created only for exhibition or direct sales to patrons and they were always made by Curtis himself. One significant dealer in Curtis prints...

Navajo Indian Turquoise and Silver Bolo Tie, circa 1960s
Located in Incline Village, NV
This is the Cadillac of the bolo tie as depicted by the Southwest Indians. Handcrafted by Navajo Indian Jim Yazz, circa 1960s, this silver bolo tie has four large irregular hand-cut turquoise stones measuring 3/4" and two smaller round stones set in a pie crust surround depicting eyes of the Indian. There are also two smaller stones on the front of the dress of the Indian on the matching pair of 1 3/4" drum like ornaments hanging beneath the main subject. The main subject Indian with six stones, is 3 5/8" high x 2 1/4" wide. The drum like ornament with accompanying silver spear ornament is 4 1/2" overall. It is marked “Jim Yazz” who was a Navajo Indian jewelry maker and worked only in silver and turquoise, indicating it is probably silver. The piece is unmarked, albeit a “518” mark appears on the main figure. The braided black leather "string like" necklace is 20" around, measured above the subject Indian. The back of the bolo is embossed on the clasp "BENNETT PAT. PEND.", indicating the possible clasp patent of Navajo Indian silversmith, Raymond Bennett, who is listed in "Barton Wright's "Hallmarks of The Southwest". The value is in the craftsmanship and aesthetics, not whether or not it’s silver. Provenance: Clive Devenish Collection Art of the American West...
