More about Besancon Tarot: The Besançon Tarot Deck is a historic deck of tarot cards that originated in the French city of Besançon, located in the eastern part of France. This deck is one of the many regional variations of the traditional Tarot de Marseille, which is one of the oldest and most influential tarot decks in existence. The Besançon Tarot Deck follows the same structure and symbolism as the Tarot de Marseille but features distinct artistic elements that set it apart from other regional decks. The deck typically consists of 78 cards, divided into two main sections: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana comprises 22 trump cards, each depicting a different archetype or symbolic figure, such as The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Lovers, and The World. These cards represent significant life events, spiritual lessons, and psychological states. The Minor Arcana consists of four suits—Wands (or Batons), Cups, Swords, and Coins (or Pentacles)—each containing 14 cards, including numbered cards from Ace to Ten and four court cards—Page, Knight, Queen, and King. These cards represent more mundane aspects of life, such as everyday challenges, emotions, conflicts, and material concerns. The Besançon Tarot Deck is known for its elegant and minimalist artistic style, characterized by simple line drawings, bold colors, and geometric shapes. The cards often feature intricate patterns and decorative motifs, adding to their visual appeal. Historically, the Besançon Tarot Deck was produced by various cardmakers in the Besançon region during the 18th and 19th centuries. These decks were primarily used for gaming and divination purposes, with tarot reading gaining popularity as a means of fortune-telling and self-reflection during this period. Today, the Besançon Tarot Deck remains a cherished collector's item and is appreciated for its historical significance, artistic beauty, and symbolic depth. It continues to be studied, replicated, and used for both recreational and spiritual purposes by tarot enthusiasts around the world.
