This is a high quality handmade Miniature or travelling wood chess set game of 32 pieces in its own lidded pokerwork decorated box, which we date to the English Edwardian period, circa 1900. This piece is all handmade. The chess set is complete with 32 wood chess pieces. The box is also handmade of wood, opening up to make a pokerwork chess board with further pokerwork design to the sides. All the pieces are hand carved, probably from boxwood with the black ones stained . The box has metal hinges and a brass fastener to keep the lid securely closed, with the pieces inside. This is a very good and complete handmade, hardwood chess set game of 32 pieces in a handmade pine box with a sliding lid, which we date to the turn of the 19th Century, Circa 1900. The chess set is complete with 32 handmade and turned hardwood pieces, ( probably made of boxwood) all in the Regency shape or French Regence style. This Regence style are quite distinctive with the taller pieces and distinctive knights when compared to other designs and have a good "feel" when playing with. The box is handmade of pine with a sliding lid of good colour. Kings are 96mm high (about 3~7/8 inches) Knights are 90mm high Pawns are 48 mm high (about 1~11/16 inches) Note: Two of the white pawns are smaller replacements but of the same style. Watts. William had learnt his trade with Thurston's, and set up his new business at 19 Soho Square, London. He brought with him from Thurston's all the latest innovations for billiard tables, immediately starting to produce models with rubber cushions and slate beds. Even though the natural rubber cushions would give extremes of elasticity according to temperature, and the slates where only an inch thick, this was to be the future of billiard tables, and Burroughes and Watts were at the forefront from the very beginning. They were quickly recognised as a world-class manufacturer and received a prize medal for a table entered for the Great Exhibition of 1851, with a similar award being received at the subsequent London Exhibition of 1862. In 1860 they were making a modest 150 full-sized tables a year, but by the end of this decade production had doubled. In 1869 they followed the lead of Thurston's and improved their cushions with "vulcanised" rubber, which were designed to minimise the effect of temperature variations. The business now looked for expansion away from London, and in the early 1870's they opened up branches in Dublin and Belfast. At this time most tables in Ireland were made with cast iron frames, and the wooden framed Burroughes & Watts tables proved popular with the locals. In 1873 the company secured a major contract for billiard tables to "Her Majesty's War Department and Admiralty" and around the same time received the warrant of Queen Victorian and Edward, Prince of Wales. This is an original and complete game of Marble Solitaire with a very good polished hand turned hardwood board and 33 early clay and stone marbles, all dating to the mid-19th century, Victorian period. The board is finely hand turned with good detail, made of well figured hardwood, possibly red walnut and sitting on three small bun feet. It has 32 equi-spaced holes with an additional one in the center and a gallery to the outer perimeter. This board is particularly good with a lovely mellow color, developed over many years of use and polishing. Cricket belt buckle, The Eleven. Brass-coloured cast metal belt buckle with raised images mounted on a flat plated metal back plate. The piece is attached to the back plate via metal pins at each of its corners that pierce the buckle and are flattened out on the reverse. On the reverse of the back plate there is also a loop and hook for a belt. The raised scene features eleven figures in varied cricketing poses wearing plain, stripped and patterned shirts, a time before 'cricketing whites' were introduced. All the gentlemen have facial hair, be it a beard, mustache or sideburns with four of the gentlemen with cricket bats, two in bowling stances, one is behind the wickets, one is attaching his pads and three are fielding.
