Bela Bartok Bronze Medal Sculpture Hungarian Music Composer Ethnomusicologist

About the Item

An historic and important bronze medal of the late, great Hungarian composer and ethnomusicologist Bela Bartok (1881 - 1945) by Croatian sculptor and medallist Ivo Kerdić (1881 - 1953). I could only find one other example of this particular casting which was from Mr. Bartok's personal collection and donated to the Saranac Laboratory Museum at Historic Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains in New York. A trove of personal items from Bela Bartok was donated by his family. The Museum has said they have, "received an important donation, a collection of personal effects that once belonged to Béla Bartók." And more from the New York Almanack website, "Bartók was an avid collector of the melodies of ancient Europe and one of the founders of ethnomusicology. He traveled the countryside of rural Eastern Europe, recording songs in peasant villages. He notated Hungarian, Slovak, Romanian, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian folk music. He also collected melodies in Moldavia, Transylvania, Algeria, and Turkey." Wikipedia has even more information on Bartok Bela, “Béla Viktor János Bartók (Hungarian: b. 25 March 1881 – d. 26 September 1945) was a Hungarian composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. He is considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century; he and Franz Liszt are regarded as Hungary's greatest composers. Through his collection and analytical study of folk music, he was one of the founders of comparative musicology, which later became known as ethnomusicology.” Fascinating stuff to be sure. And for a short bio from Wikipedia on Mr. Kerdic, "Ivo Kerdić was born 19 May 1881 in Davor, a small village near Slavonski Brod, Croatia, at that time in Austria-Hungary. The son of a wood merchant, he spent 4 years in elementary school, before going to Zagreb to learn the trade of locksmith in the school for artisans. In 1900, he went to Paris, where he worked during the day, and studied applied art in the evenings, learning engraving. He returned home on the death of his father, one year later. Not having the funds to resume his studies in Paris, in 1902 Kerdić went to Vienna, where he worked at the Gillar Bronze Factory, rising to foreman. Kerdić returned to Zagreb in 1913, where he took up a position as lecturer at the College of Arts and Crafts. He pioneered bronze casting at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he taught metalworking from 1923 to 1947. Ivo Kerdić died in Zagreb 27 October 1953... Kerdić is best known for his metalwork. he worked primarily as a medallist and is considered one of the leading exponents of his time." Mr. Kerdic signed this medal using his monogram of his initials.
