Mid Century Collection of Leica Ernst Leitz Camera Lenses Summaron Hektor

About the Item

A collection of mid 20th century Leica / Ernst Leitz lenses. There is a Summaron, a Hektor and a Range Finder. Also, cases and lens caps. All of these have been previously used. What makes Leica so good you may be asking. Well here's a quote that's sums up the appeal, "Shooting with a Leica is like a long tender kiss, like firing an automatic pistol, like an hour on the analyst’s couch.” - Henri Cartier-Bresson. I wanted to learn more about the Leica / Ernst Leitz company and so I turned to the Independent Photographer website, "Hailed as the best camera brand and pioneer of the Magnum aesthetic, Leica is one of the most prestigious names in photography, a camera responsible for some of the most memorable images in collective memory. The first 35mm camera was a Leica, and its invention was a game-changer for a flourishing artistic and journalistic medium. In the early 1900s cameras were still bulky and difficult to carry around. Annoyed by the lengths a photographer had to take to get their shot, Ernst Leitz, a German optical engineer who ran an institute that produced microscopes, was convinced that a smaller portable camera could be manufactured with his lenses. Determined to change things, Leitz instigated the Leica prototype in 1914 and later handed over the reins of production to Oskar Barnack, a fellow optician, and photographer." The Leica / Ernst Leitz name is synonymous with important images, photojournalism, artistic photography and quality. But surely it takes more to capture a moment? I'll leave you with this quote also from Henri Cartier-Bresson, "It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera… they are made with the eye, heart and head.”

  • Powerful Hoi Lebadang Abstract Mid Century Lithograph Signed and Numbered
    By Hoi Lebadang
    Located in Atlanta, GA
A mid 20th century lithograph print by Vietnamese / French artist Hoi Lebadang (1921 - 2015) signed and numbered. The colors employed, shades of red, white and charcoal set against a golden yellow, signify warmth and richness. The abstract composition beckons further inspection. The techniques used for creating this work of art include an embossed area of the work where the paper surface is raised in an abstract design. This work is presented in its original frame. I knew nothing of the artist when I bought this work, I simply knew that it appealed to me. A quick search online revealed this fascinating biography on the artist that I hope you'll read and enjoy. This comes from the Outside Folk Gallery website, "War shaped the life of Lebadang (Lê Bá Đảng.) Sometimes called Hoi Lebadang, this painter’s experiences in colonial-era Vietnam and WWII-era France flow into his work. Working at the turning point between 19th-century bohemianism and 20th-century modernism, he existed in two worlds simultaneously. The path that brought Lebadang to France in 1939 and secured his place in art history is complex. Looking at his childhood, you would never guess that this young Vietnamese boy would have such an impact on the art world. After shortening his name in 1950 to Lebadang, he only used Hoi when making lithographs. In colonial-era Vietnam, the French ruled Vietnam from the 1880s until 1954; France beckoned like a beacon for art and culture. Lê Bá Đảng (surname, middle name, given name), born in 1921, grew up with his eyes fixed on France. He grew up in a middle-class peasant family and, after primary school, felt the pull to travel. Lebadang signed...
