17th Century European Religious Book Binding Brass Mounts Vellum Monumental Size

About the Item

An antique animal skin or vellum book binding with brass or possibly bronze mounts (sometimes called furniture - centerpiece, corner pieces) of monumental scale. The work measures almost two feet in height! There is one page remaining, history has made its mark on this antique book binding. The spine of the binding is hand lettered in black ink with a square shaped cross above the words VISP. and PROP. Underneath is an image of a flower. Possibly an antiphonary for liturgical choir uses. The binding is supported by wood boards on the front and back covers. It looks as if there were clasps in place at one time which would have served to secure this volume closed. The brass furniture mounts on the front and back covers have ornate, Gothic styling. The heaviness and scale leads the viewer to understand that this must have been an incredibly important volume in its day. It looks as if one of the corner pieces has been replaced at one time in history. The remaining seven corner pieces all look to be original to the volume, as do the two center pieces. In addition to the aforementioned furniture decorations, there are also medallions along the top and bottom edges placed in the center. There look to have been several repairs made to the book binding over the course of its history. The Table of Contents page lists the names of various Saints. The relic end paper attached to the inside of the front cover appears to have some writing on it. When the book binding is closed, it measures approximately 3" deep by 15.5" wide by 22" high.
