About the Item

Cameo or intaglio, Hercules against the Nemean lion. Glass. Possibly, Italy, 19th century. The figurative representation that can be seen, of a muscular man fighting with a lion, is common in this type of neoclassical intaglios. It is considered to be influenced by works by Pichler and Calandrelli, who, in turn, were inspired by an early piece by Nicolo. Poniatowski (engraving by Thomas Worlidge, 1757, London British Museum, Dep. Prints and Drawings n. 1859.0709.889) made an engraving of this image or a similar one.
