About the Item

As protagonist of Human Rights, Eleanor Roosevelt, the longest-serving First Lady of the Unites States writes from Claridges Hotel in London to mr. dr. I.G. van Maasdijk, General Secretary at the Court of Queen Wilhelmina of The Netherlands, about a lecture to be delivered by her. Eleanor Roosevelt was a friend of Princess Juliana, who was inaugurated Queen on September 6th. 1948. Mr. dr. I.G. Van Maasdijk became the personal chamberlain of Queen Juliana. Anna Eleanor Roosevelt ; October 11, 1884 — November 7, 1962) was the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, holding the post from 1933 to 1945 during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms in office. President Harry S. Truman later called her the "First Lady of the World" in tribute to her Human rights achievements * The Office of the First Lady of the United States is accountable to the First Lady for her to carry out her duties as Hostess of the White House and is also in charge of all social and ceremonial events of the White House. The First Lady has her own staff that includes a chief of staff, press secretary, White House Social Secretary, Chief Floral Designer, etc. The Office of the First Lady is an entity of the White House Office, a branch of the Executive Office of the President. In the late 1940s, Democrats in New York and throughout the country courted Roosevelt for political office. "At first I was surprised that anyone should think that I would want to run for office, or that I was fitted to hold office. Then I realized that some people felt that I must have learned something from my husband in all the years that he was in public life! They also knew that I had stressed the fact that women should accept responsibility as citizens. I heard that I was being offered the nomination for governor or for the United States Senate in my own state, and even for Vice President. And some particularly humorous souls wrote in and suggested that I run as the first woman President of the United States! The simple truth is that I have had my fill of public life of the more or less stereotyped kind ". Following her husband's death in 1945 Eleanor carried out FDR's will turning over Hyde Park to the Federal Government as a museum; the 'Franklin D Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum' opened on April 12, 1946, setting a precedent for future Presidential libraries. Eleanor remained active in politics for the rest of her life. She pressed the US to join and support the United Nations and became one of its first delegates. She served as the first chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights, and played an instrumental role in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which includes FDR's 'Four Freedoms' On the night of September 28, 1948, Eleanor spoke in favor of the Declaration, calling it "the international Magna Carta of all men everywhere". The Declaration was adopted by the General Assembly on December 10, 1948. The vote was unanimous except for eight abstentions: six Soviet Bloc countries as well as South Africa and Saudi Arabia. Roosevelt attributed the abstention of the Soviet bloc nations to Article 13, which provided the right of citizens to leave their countries. Later she chaired the John F. Kennedy administration's Presidential Commission on the Status of Women. By her death, she was regarded as "one of the most esteemed women in the world" and "the object of almost universal respect". In 1999, she was ranked in the top ten ofGallup's List of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th century. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948 at Palais de Chaillot, Paris. The Declaration arose directly from the experience of the Second World War and represents the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled. The full text is published by the United Nations on its website. It consists of 30 articles which have been elaborated in subsequent international treaties, regional human rights instruments, national constitutions and laws. The International Bill of Human Rights consists of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and its two Optional Protocols. In 1966 the General Assembly adopted the two detailed Covenants, which complete the International Bill of Human Rights; and in 1976, after the Covenants had been ratified by a sufficient number of individual nations, the Bill took on the force of international law.
