Life Style Collection of Objects from the Estate of Paul & Bunny Mellon

About the Item

This widely diverse collection of small objects comes from the estate of Paul & Bunny Mellon and comprises things from the estate. Some of the objects are made in the studio on the property, the two vintage travel games (a late 1930s mahjong set & a leather covered backgammon set from France 8 across 5 deep & 2 tall) are from Mrs. Mellon's personal travel gear, the hand-sculpted Terracotta bust is family related and is date in pencil 1958 & signed by the artist, as is the very nice enamel copper plaque portrait dated 1929 and artist signed with the location Geneva. The plaque comes with a small frame found with the plaque but is not set into the frame. The lovely hand beaded pair of floral arrangements in small miniature terracotta pots are most likely made to her order as decorative gifts or for table settings 4 inches tall, the pair of match box covers decorated with shells are also handmade as well as the decoupaged & reverse painted set of glass shell coasters. The collection also includes a number of oriental objects. A very nice 19th Century Japanese lacquered inro. This small compact piece is worked in gold and red lacquer 3 inches tall & 2'50 across with shell inlay and its companion complemented toggle carved from bone is inlaid in mother-of-pearl and lacquered as well with both being strung on the origin silk cord. The oriental selection also includes a pair of poly chromed soap stone vases and a very nice south east Asian carving of an exotic bird which is well detailed and finely carved. Also included in this collection are several Italian carved marble items. A covered shell shaped box 7 inches diameter, a small classical tazza and a pair of classical column shafts. Lastly the collection also has a fun and interesting 19th Century Staffordshire group of a person riding a goat covered in flowers and foliage 9 inches tall & 6.50 across and a pair of gilded bronze curtain tie backs 6 inches tall. The Mellon's life revolved around travel philanthropy, horticulture and family. Expressed in each object in this collection can be found all of these traits. While no one thing is important in and of itself it all mattered in some way to a profoundly important family that dominated America Social values for many decades. The measurements given are for the tallest object but the sizes range from that down to only 3 inches tall and 2.50 across. This collection has been reduced from 1400.00
