Insignia, Order of Charles III and Order of Isabella the Catholic, Spain, 19th C
Located in Madrid, ES
Badge of the Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Carlos III and necklace of the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic. Gold, enamel. Spain, XIX century. Possible insignia of knighthood or commander's degree composed of an enameled ring from which hangs a crown of leaves with a blue bow and the cross of the Order, with golden fleurs-de-lys, the four arms of the cross and the central emblems (the motto Virtuti et Merito around the two crossed C's around the number 3 in Roman on one side; Immaculate on a gold background on the other). The necklace presents ovals with two different decorations (initial F and the number 7 in Romans, alluding to Ferdinand VII; emblems of the Order of Elizabeth II), links with arrows on a square and a torch with an arch, and a pendant with the cross of this Miniature order and crown of leaves enameled in green. Formerly known as the Royal and Very Distinguished Order of Carlos III, it was established by this monarch in 1771 with the aim of decorating those who had stood out for their actions for the benefit of Spain and the Crown. Although the insignia have undergone changes over time (such as the replacement of the Royal Crown in 1789 by one of olive branches), the basic elements of it have been maintained. The insignia of the commander's degree, created in 1847, was very similar to that of knights (somewhat larger in size) and was worn on the neck, with a tie in the colors of the Order. The Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic was instituted by Ferdinand VII in 1815 as the Royal and American Order of Isabella the Catholic, and consists of nine degrees. Its emblems are a composition with two columns and the motto Plus Ultra, accompanied by crowned spheres, in addition to the mention, as indicated, of Fernando VII...
