19th Century French Green Marble Cross and Holy Water with Cloisonné Technique
About the Item
This marble and cloisonné cross with a holy water recipient was created in France, circa 1880. The beautiful, antique piece has intricate cloisonné work with additional enamel, stone and bronze elements. The embellished cross is set on a simple, gleaming green and grey marble base. At the bottom of the marble cross is a small basin, which was used in its original context to hold holy water. The traditional religious object is in excellent condition and has sturdy brass backing for easy hanging. Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metal or marble objects. In this technique, enamel, glass, or gemstones are separated by strips of flattened wire and placed on a sturdy metal backing. This eye-catching piece would make a lovely addition to an entryway or living room.
