Antique Hand Carved Sculpture of Joseph & Baby Jesus on Gothic Pulpit Like Base

About the Item

Finer quality carved and heart warming work of religious art. This finest quality and all original work of religious art is another one of our recent great finds. This intricately hand-carved wooden statuette of Joseph and the Child Jesus dates from the mid 1800s and because of the marvelous fruitwood we believe it originates from France where it may have graced a church chapel. Entirely handcarved out of wood and with amazing Gothic details this type of workmanship never seizes to amaze us. The artist has perfectly managed to capture the love and joy, especially in the face of the Child Jesus. Over the many decades Joseph lost his right hand and a small part on the back of the removable Gothic 'rail' has gone missing too. The surface of the non-patinated fruitwood combined with the few woodworm holes on the back of the base give this Gothic antique an even more ancient look and feel. There certainly are no woodworms alive in this piece anymore, because we always treat the holes when we find them (even when we think there can no longer be activity in the wood). To us, this rare ecclesiastical antique also is a symbol of unconditional love and god knows we could do with some more of that in the world. This beautiful, loving and lively sculpture will make you feel good everytime you look at it. The character ascribed to the pelican in this context is nearly as fabulous as that of the phœnix. From a clumsy, gluttonous, piscivorous water-bird, it was by the growth of legends transformed into a mystic emblem of Christ, whom Dante terms "Nostro Pelicano". St. Hieronymus gives the story of the pelican restoring its young ones destroyed by serpents as an illustration of the destruction of man by the old Serpent, and his salvation by the blood of Christ.
