About the Item

Sizeable and double sided work of Gothic art from a monastery. With Gothic art and antiques from all eras being one of our specialities, finding this meaningful and rare antique more than made our day. Both in design and in terms of the use of materials, we had never seen a piece like this before. The former owner had salvaged this handcrafted and hand-painted work of religious art from a monastery. It is made of solid and thick wood and it is made to hang from the ceiling, because it is double sided and you can clearly see which is the back and which the front. The metal ring atop is hand-forged and the grey circular and vertical pattern below the metal ring is all hand-carved. The hand-painted eagles in quatrefoil outlines and on either side, symbolize Saint John and that is also what it reads in Latin in the scrolling banner on the front side. There may have been another piece below the gilt curve at the bottom, because you can see that it is rather crudely sawn there. The outer lining (so outside the quatrefoil elements) on both sides is still covered with almost all of the real gold leaf that was applied when it was first made. We believe that this rare and religious artefact was made between 1890 and 1910. In this European Gothic Revival era many unique works of religious art were hand-crafted for new churches and monasteries that were being built in those days.
