About the Item
Sculpture, carved wood, glass, metal.
Carved wooden chapel with decoration on the top of balustrade and balusters in the shape of a vase of a certain Baroque memory, which presents three of its four fronts in transparent glass and rises slightly on circular legs. Inside, you can see a golden background (in the front room of the chapel, enhancing a carved and polychrome plant composition), and a polychrome sculpture of the Immaculate surrounded by flat rays and wavy and pointed and circular alternative. The carving stands on a pedestal, and presents a white robe and a blue cloak; Mary stands on the Orb of Creation, in which a serpent appears (linked to Sin). The size shows a clear influence of models of the Spanish Baroque, in addition to certain details such as the position that can be linked to Neoclassicism. This mixture and the maintenance of Baroque influence are common in Spanish sculpture of the 18th century."
Size: 38.5 x 38 x 65 cms (Virgin).

Reredos Fragment, Gilded Wood, circa Second Half of the 17th Century

Altarpiece. Wood carved and gilded. Baroque, towards the second half of the 17th century.
The Solomonic column was an element already known in the Renaissance (and before) that was popularized in art, in large part, thanks to the Baldachin of St. Peter's Basilica of the Vatican by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1624-1633), where he presented branches. In Spain, this type can already be seen in the Silver Tabernacle of the Cathedral of Seville (Juan de Alfaro, 15931596), used in altarpieces from the 1620s; nevertheless, the apogee of the Solomonic column will come from the hand of José Benito de Churriguera, whose altarpieces have an extraordinary importance since the second half of the 17th century and already at the beginning of the 18th century (note similarities
and differences between the present altarpiece and that of the Convent of San Esteban...

Silver Pax O Portapaz, Spain, 16th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
Portapaz. Silver in its color and gilded. Century XVI.
Portapaz made of silver that has a handle (decorated with delicate plant motifs similar to those of the pilasters) and a female and a male bust at the bottom, as well as other architectural elements on the back, and, on the front, an architectural composition classicist basement (with busts flanking a flower and a cross), two pilasters (vegetal decoration and capital recalling the composite order) with entablature (flowers flanking an angel's head; moldings), and a semicircular arch finish with elements veined in relief under cross and flanked by two architectural motifs in the upper part. This composition frames and enhances a gilt silver relief where you can see the Lament or Cry over the Body of Christ, with the Virgin holding the head of Jesus, Saint John at her side, the Magdalene and other characters, a cross following the group and a landscape background with houses and plant elements. This architectural structure mentioned is similar to the one present in other 16th century portapaces, such as that of the Magdalena de Dos Hermanas parish (Hernando de Ballesteros el Mozo, around 1575); or that of the Galaroza parish (same author and date); or that of the portapaz of San Miguel de Jerez de los Caballeros (in some details); etc. As for the relief, it is possible to clearly see a strong Italian influence, and the similarity between it and important pieces such as the Portapaz known as “de Cisneros by Juan de Burgos (1493-1497; MuseoCatedralicio de Alcalá de Henares), as well as in paintings and reliefs. Also noteworthy are both the male and female busts in the lower area and the Maltese cross (or Saint John's) that appears in this area. This symbol was used since the 12th century as an insignia by the Knights Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Order of Malta...

18th Century Spanish Virgin Mary of Immaculate Conception, Handcrafted Sculpture
Located in Madrid, ES
Completely hand-crafted in 18th century Spain, this sculpture of the Virgin stands 1.5 meters / 5 feet tall and was most certainly created for devotional purposes, to be displayed in a church or chapel.
Besides its impressive size this sculpture is an excellent, museum-quality example of the Spanish “Estofado” polychrome technique, developed during the Gothic period to imitate rich brocade fabrics. The finely carved “fabric” areas of the sculpture would be first covered in gesso, and then a layer of gold leaf would be applied. The gold leaf would then be painted over with various colors of tempera paints. Once dry, the painted surface would be incised or scratched away in patterns, revealing the gold beneath.
The sculpture was professionally restored in 2022 by a firm that is often hired by the Spanish government to work on historic building interiors and museum pieces. The virgin was carefully cleaned, repaired and its condition stabilized. A complete and fully-illustrated restoration report will be included with purchase.
Often confused with the virgin birth of Jesus, the belief that the Blessed Virgin Mary herself was conceived “immaculately” without original sin has been variously defended and debated within the Catholic Church since the pre-Middle Ages. For centuries, artists struggled to create an acceptable visual representation of this highly abstract concept, in part taking inspiration from the Book of Revelation and other scriptural sources.
We see the Virgin standing on a half moon (biblically inspired, though also an ancient symbol of chastity) with her long natural hair loose down her back, another indication of purity. Both her white tunic and flowing blue mantle...
