About the Item

Golf trophy sculpture by David Marshall, in cast brass and aluminum, expressed in his unmistakable Brutalist vocabulary. The goblet-form cup (gold-toned brass) features a split rim and an applied, silver-toned dimpled golf ball; it rises from a weighty, sloped square base in aluminum with the characteristic casting pits and workshop tool marks. The dialogue between polished surfaces and raw textures is quintessential David Marshall sculpture, where industrial processes are harnessed for organic effect. The base bears the cast “dm” monogram, while the underside is stamped with the maker’s mark of “David Marshall – Diseños, S.A., Sevilla – España” — dual markings that confirm studio production in Spain. Marshall (born Edinburgh, 1942) established his Andalusian studio in the late 1960s and has long worked in sand-cast brass and aluminum, producing sculptures, functional objects and a notable body of bespoke trophies and awards for private clients and clubs. This example distills that practice: a Brutalist brass trophy whose golf motif reads as art object as much as award. While the piece is undated, its materials and execution are consistent with his late-20th-century Spanish design output. Ideal for a study, office, or clubhouse, it also offers a singular gift for a golf collector who values design as much as sport.
