George Bussey Automaton Caddie Golf Bag

About the Item

Antique Caddie Golf Bag, George Bussey Automaton Caddie. A wonderful example of an early auto caddy by George Bussey. This is a rare find indeed as very few of these bags have survived, and they are difficult to obtain. The caddie has a boxwood carry handle and the main body of the caddie is made of mahogany. The boxwood handle is attached to the oak legs via metal rods and a brass mechanism. With this clever design the legs will open out automatically when the lower end is placed on the ground, they will then fold back in when lifted up. The canvas & leather bag for golf balls and the half pencil bag to the bottom of the stand are the original bags (flap is a replacement). The caddie stand is stamped with Bussey's name on the brass mechanism, and on both legs. There is a brass embossed trade label "Geo. Bussey & Co., London (with the Bussey arrow logo)' pinned onto the caddie bag. This is the original caddie stand golf bag and is even more desirable as it has a small amount of fretwork on the back board. George Bussey was a large London manufacturer of high-quality equipment for sports and games. • Golf Lithograph, Royal St. George's, "the Maiden" Green
    By Cecil Aldin
    Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Royal St. George's after Cecil Aldin. A mounted and framed golf photolithograph of Royal St. George's, Sandwich, "The Maiden" green after Cecil Aldin. Printed and published by Eyre & Spottiswoode, Ltd., His Majesty's printers. 4 Middle New Street, London, E.C.4. Aldin produced few golfing works and this example is one of a series of six golf course views "Six Famous Golf Courses" published in the 1920's. Aldin's 6 golf courses were: Sunningdale, North Berwick, Westward Ho!, Royal St. George's, Walton Heath and St. Andrews. Founded in 1887 and intended by its founder Dr William Purves to be a rival to St Andrew's in the South of England, St George's is consistently ranked amongst the leading courses in the world. The Club occupies a unique place in the history of golf, for it was here in 1894, that the Open Championship was first played outside Scotland. In that year, the great J. H. Taylor was the winner but there have been thirteen other winners over the years, most recently Darren Clarke in 2011. In addition to the Open Championship, the Club has hosted the British P.G.A. Championship on five occasions, the Walker Cup twice, a victorious Curtis Cup in 1988, and has been the venue for the British Amateur Championship on no less than thirteen occasions. Winners at the Club are a veritable Who's Who of golf; Jack Nicklaus won the Grand Challenge as an amateur, Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros...

  • French Musical Automaton Picture Clock
    Located in New Orleans, LA
One of the most amazing timepieces we have ever acquired that offers far more than meets the eye, this incredible work of art blends the beauty of a painting with the mechanical complexities of both a cylinder music box and an automaton. While it is clear to see the integrated clock residing within the arched giltwood and gesso frame, when activated, this painting quite literally comes alive. As the cylinder mechanism within plays its lovely tune, every character in the farrier's shop becomes animated – from the group of farrier's toiling away at the forge and anvil forming the horseshoes, to the wagging of the charming terrier's tale. This musical automaton picture clock is attributed to Xavier Tharin of Paris who was the preeminent creator of this fantastical "moving pictures", especially this particular farrier scene. His process mixed oil painting and hand-colored lithograph images that were layered starting from the back, middle and foreground to craft the complex series of movements throughout the painting. A look inside this particular work reveals the complex mechanism (with the three gongs, pendulum and cylinder components immediately visible) which must run the timepiece, the cylinder musical component plus the multitude of moving elements in the painting...a truly incredible feat considering the technical prowess to create just one of these devices. Musical picture clocks...
