Antique Rut Niblick, Hickory Shafted Golf Club
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Hickory Shafted Rut Iron. A good quality smooth faced rut iron, also known as a rut niblick, rutter or track iron. Rut irons were commonly used to hit the ball from cart tracks and deep ruts etc. Young Tom Morris was known to hit his rut iron from the fairway to play a high shot onto the green, a shot only a player of his calibre could master. They say he even managed to get backspin on the ball. The golf club is with hickory shaft and a polished sheep skin grip. The head has no makers marks, but it is a high-quality club and heavy in weight, has a long hosel (10 ½ cm) and a thick blade, not to be confused with the later 'Rut Niblick' that was lighter, thinner blade and a shorter hosel. A nice desirable golf collectable...

Jack Morris, Transitional Long Nose Golf Club
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Scared Head Transitional Long Nose Golf Club. An elegant scared head transitional long nose golf club by Jack Morris of St Andrews. This great looking club is also known as a driver or brassie with a slight loft, it has a black stained club head, lead weight to the rear and the traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole, the polished head is stamped 'J. Morris'. The hickory shaft with polished sheep skin grip. This is a very nice example of a scared head golf club from the 1890's. We believe the shaft is a replacement as it has old markings for a much longer grip. The measurements shown are the full length of the shaft and the width and depth of the face. The approximate head size (see image):- a = 9 cm b = 3.2 cm c = 4.6 cm John (Jack) Morris was born in St Andrews in 1847 and was the son of George and nephew to the great Old Tom...

George Bussey Automaton Caddie Golf Bag
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Antique Caddie Golf Bag, George Bussey Automaton Caddie. A wonderful example of an early auto caddy by George Bussey. This is a rare find indeed as very few of these bags have survived, and they are difficult to obtain. The caddie has a boxwood carry handle and the main body of the caddie is made of mahogany. The boxwood handle is attached to the oak legs via metal rods and a brass mechanism. With this clever design the legs will open out automatically when the lower end is placed on the ground, they will then fold back in when lifted up. The canvas & leather bag for golf balls and the half pencil bag to the bottom of the stand are the original bags (flap is a replacement). The caddie stand is stamped with Bussey's name on the brass mechanism, and on both legs. There is a brass embossed trade label "Geo. Bussey & Co., London (with the Bussey arrow logo)' pinned onto the caddie bag...

Antique Golf Print, Royal North Devon Golf Club, Photogravure of Westward Ho
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Royal North Devon Golf Club 1893 by Mayall & Co. Ltd. A great image of the members of the 'Royal North Devon Golf Club, Westward Ho!' from 1893. The figures are all photographs superimposed onto a painted background of the course. In the margin is printed 'Permanent Autotype, Produced by Mayall & Co. Ltd. 73 Piccadilly'. The image appears very much photographic but is more of a photomechanical print rather than a photograph. John Jabez Edwin Paisley Mayall (1813-1901) was an English photographer who in 1860 took the first carte-de-visite photographs of Queen Victoria. Taken from Royal North Devon:- Royal North Devon at Westward Ho! Can rightly claim to be the cradle of English Golf. Founded in 1864, it is the oldest golf course in the country and is regarded as the St Andrews of the South. The golf course is as tough as any of the UK's more famous links layouts and has recently been placed in Golf World 's 'Top 100 Courses in the World' that a golfer 'must play'. Not only is Royal North Devon a great course, it is also a place of huge historical importance. Inside the warmly welcoming clubhouse, the golf museum, honours boards and the clubs top competition trophies are worth a visit on their own and help to tell the story of the game and this remarkable club's unique place in it. Above all, this is great, natural golf that is largely unchanged from 100 years ago when Harold Hilton et al pronounced Westward Ho! As England's No 1 competition golf course. RND is pure, raw exhilaration and ultimately the experience of playing a fast running links in a stiff breeze still tests the very best in the game. Many of the great players of the last 100 years were regular competitors at RND but the greatest of them all is without doubt John Henry Taylor...
