Vintage U.S. Navy Pennant, circa 1940s

About the Item

Presented is a vintage U.S. Navy felt pennant, from the early 1940s. This WWII era pennant is constructed of dark blue felt with yellow printed lettering. The pennant has a white felt headband, which is sewn on with a running stitch. The pennant reads “U.S. NAVY” and is printed with a fouled anchor at left. The anchor has the letters, U.S.N, incorporated into its design. Although the symbol is used by the United States Navy, the U.S.N printed does not Stand for “U.S. Navy.” The U.S. adopted the iconic symbol from the British in the late 1800s for Naval Chief Petty Officers to wear, as it represents the trials and tribulations they are forced to endure on a daily basis. The "U" stands for unity as a reminder of cooperation, maintaining harmony, and continuity of purpose and action. The "S" represents service, referring to both their fellow man and their Navy. Lastly, the "N" refers to navigation, to help keep themselves on a righteous course so that they may walk upright. The United States Navy grew tremendously during WWII, as the United States faced a two-front war on the seas. It achieved notable acclaim in the Pacific Theater, where it was instrumental to the Allies' successful "island hopping" Campaign . The U.S. Navy fought six major battles with the Imperial Japanese Navy, including the Battle of Midway, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and the Battle of Okinawa. The U.S. Navy also assisted the British Royal Navy in the naval war against Germany and Italy and participated in the largest amphibious invasion of all time in Normandy, France in June of 1944. By war's end in 1945, the United States Navy added nearly 1,200 major combatant ships, including twenty-seven aircraft carriers, eight new battleships, and ten pre-war battleships, comprising over 70% of the world's total numbers. Condition: Felt pennant, with printed lettering and sewn headband. In good condition, printed text is still intact and legible. Headband has two small holes at top and bottom from past display. Cut edges have minimal fraying, not affecting stability of the pennant. Pennant has been archivally mounted and framed in a custom-built black wooden frame.

Offered is an original U.S. Navy propaganda poster advertising "Navy Day." Below a large image of a U.S. battleship is block text reading "Navy Day, October 27th." The poster dates to 1940, shortly after the American entry into World War II. The poster highlights an impressive depiction of a column of U.S. battleships within a red border with small white anchors. The printed signature of U.S. Navy artist matte Murphey appears at the bottom right of the image, while the bottom edge of the poster bears the printing line: "NRB - 27919 - 8-5-40 - 18M." Each of the ships depicted in the image appear to feature cage masts, indicating that the artist was working from a reference image taken prior to the modernization of the U.S. battleship force in the late 1920s-early 1930s. The first “Navy Day” was celebrated on October 27, 1922. October 27, 1922 was suggested by the Navy League to recognize Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday.
