About the Item

Carved and painted Indian tobacconist figure. Attributed to Samuel Robb (1851-1928), New York, on its original base. These figures were placed outside the stores to indicate to the clients that tobacco was for sale inside. Samuel Robb often carved these figures, taking inspiration from his wife. Service restoration at sculpture and some in-paintings: left-hand feather, top of upper feather, top of right-hand feathers, extremity of nose. Ex Charles Ratton collection Samuel Robb was a prolific carver of full size examples of wooden Indians stores. He had a New York studio where much of the sculptures were made. They were sold mainly on the East Coast. The cigar store Indian sculpture was widely used in tavern and shop signs of the 18th century. When the tobacco trade and use proliferated in the 19th century, the Indian inevitably became the visual image of tobacco shops to advertise their wares. The introduction of mild tobacco from Cuba increased the use of cigars, and many tobacco shops opened as a result. Soldiers fighting in the American-Mexican war found cigar smoking much pleasurable and the taste and fashion of cigar smoking spread to the rich population. Plattsburg in New York State was a centre of cigar making. Many sculptures were made for the eastern part of the United States, and shops were proud to exhibit the sculptures of Indians. They were also shown outside the shops, even in unclement weather, to attract the clientele of mild tobacco now available. The cigar trade was prosperous until the 1930s when cigarettes and pipes became popular. Sculptures then of cigar man were bought by collectors and later on by Folk Art museums in the country.
