Rare Antique Hand Crafted Renaissance Revival Bronze Griffin Sculptures Bookends
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning, rare and meaningful bookends from the 1800s. If only the rarest and the best condition griffin-related antiques are fit for your collection then this pair of hand crafted bronze bookends should be on your shortlist. The striking design and the symbolism in this pair of antiques, is what makes them so much more than just bookends. Griffins symbolise the rule over the earth & sky. Their eagle heads representing the sky and their lionesk bodies and legs representing the earth. It will be no surprise therefor that, at the same time, they also symbolise AND are also the guardians of the divine/godly power. Since the ancient Griffin symbol is found in, among others, Greek mythology and in Arab and Asian folklore, it is clear why these worldly symbols also are perfect for bookends. Besides their deeper meaning, in these bookends they have also been presented in the best possible workmanship quality and patina and they will look great no matter where and how you decide to have them on display. If you like these hand-crafted and meaningful ancient symbol bookends...

Antique Hand Carved Gothic Art Feeding Pelicans as Symbol of Christ Bookends
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning and probably unique religious bookend sculptures from the 1800s. If only the rarest and the best condition Gothic antiques are fit for your collection then this pair of hand carved bookends should be on your shortlist. Saint Hieronymus gives the story of the pelican restoring its young ones destroyed by serpents as an illustration of the destruction of man by the old Serpent, and his salvation by the blood of Christ. The Pelican in Christian symbolism is an emblem of Jesus Christ, by "whose blood we are healed" and it is also a symbol of charity. Many early painters mistakenly represented it more similar to an eagle, and not as a natural pelican which is why most people today still are a bit confused at first when this hand carved, symbolic bird is called a pelican. This striking and all hand carved pair may have originally been owned by a clergyman in a church or monastery, because these works of religious art come from a large collection of truly rare church artefacts. What makes these particular Gothic antiques extra rare is that they are sharply hand-carved out of solid nutwood, whereas most Gothic antiques are carved out of oak. We particularly love the stunningly carved pelican heads and the fact that both these antiques from the 1800s have never had one single bit of damage to them. Judging from their size and shape, they were probably custom made to hold mid-size 18th and 19th century bibles...

Antique and Good Size Early 20th Century Arts and Crafts Carved Owl Bookends
Located in Lisse, NL
Hand carved, rare and stylish, standing owl bookstands. Given the fact that owls are the international symbol for wisdom and learning, they are the perfect sculptures on a pair of bookends. These good size, hand-sculpted owls are beautiful in size, shape and in color and they are a joy to own and look at. These are no sleepy owls and with their piercing, yellow glass eyes scanning the room, every mouse will think twice before entering. The bright colored eyes against the ebonized wooden backgrounds, make them stand out even more and for that reason they also look amazing from further away. These decorative and meaningful pieces of early 20th century craftsmanship will also make a great gift for a teacher, student or anybody with an interest in learning and knowing. These owl sculpture bookends...
