Light Up Library Glass Globe on Metal Base by Barrere and Thomas France, 1950s

About the Item

Girard, Barrere, and Thomas Paris manufactured this impressive terrestrial light-up globe in the 1950s. Geographer J. Forest designed it. This library glass globe is covered with print paper rotating on a chromed metal and aluminum stand. Besides regular countries' maps, there are ocean currents and the main trade routes of the period. The electricity elements were updated to fit US standards. The lamp is in perfect working condition (check pic 2 and 3 with on and off lights). For a precise dating of this library globe, we used two pieces of information: 1) Mention of Afrique Occidentale Francaise: French West Africa (in French: Afrique Occidentale Francaise or AOF) was a federation of eight French colonial territories in Africa: Mauritania, Senegal, French Sudan (now Mali), French Guinea, Ivory Coast, Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), Dahomey (now Benin) and Niger. The capital of the Federation was Dakar. The Federation existed from 1895 to 1958. 2) Mention of Israel: The country was created officially in 1948. We can determine that this globe was manufactured and used between 1948 and 1958. The globe is in good condition, with minor surface scratches due to regular use, but it does not significantly affect the overall appearance. Measurements: 13.38 in diameter (34 cm) x 18.13 in high (46 cm). Note: Girard, Barrère et Thomas (the complete name) is a French establishment founded in 1934 and known by this name between 1946 and 1959. Located at 17 rue Buci in Paris, the company was taken over in 1974 and still specializes in school and cartographic documents.
